Hello all,
I'm relatively new to snowmobiles and 2-strokes and clutches and such. I took my '77 440 Liquifire out for a run last winter and stretched its legs a little. She got up to speed quickly (I'm guessing 40mph... speedo's broken) but it reached a certain point and then the engine revs shot up really quick but my travel speed fell off dramatically. I backed off the throttle then tried it again, and the same thing happened.
I want to know what is happening and how to fix it.

Todd, it sounds like you have issues with the clutching. Do you have a sevice manual? Inspect both the primary and secondary clutches for broken springs. Before we go any further, how much knowledge do you have of repairing snowmobiles.
Here is a link that generaly discribes how a snowmobile clutch works.

Thanks harleysportster. Wondering what I'll find? The belly pan has been crunched, and I'm suspicious that that has shifted the motor enough to throw off the belt alignment. Good video link, too.
I'm going to pull the motor so I can pound out the pan. Next problem will be how to remove/repair the primary clutch without factory tools! And yes, I have a factory shop manual.

Re: '77 Liquifire hi speed problem
You will need to buy a clutch puller to remove the primary clutch from the engine. The face-plate is held on with 6 small bolts, the main spring is under that. Just remove them evenly and push in on the plate as you are nearing the end of the bolts, it is under pressure. You can remove the weights for inspection but you can't get to the torque buttons unless the spider is removed. I would take it to your local sled shop for that.

The clutch came off without problems, thanks to the clutch removal tool that was given to me by a former mechanic of one of the assembly lines at Horicon!
I've had the 102C inspected, and both upper and lower bushings are bad, as are the buttons. Can you set me off in the right direction as to who to get replacement parts from?

Well, that's a problem. The parts are scarce and not available right now until CPC decides to start releasing the parts. If you didn't know, Comet was caught up in the Recession a few years ago and CPC bough them out but have not done anything with them yet. sometimes the parts show up on Ebay.ziebellski wrote:The clutch came off without problems, thanks to the clutch removal tool that was given to me by a former mechanic of one of the assembly lines at Horicon!
