Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
Hi all,
I am new to this forum and really enjoy reading what everybody has to say and helping out. About a week ago I picked up a 1980 440 trailfire, doesnt run yet and needs some work done to it. The primary clutch is cracked on one side and has a good chip out of the other side so I need another, I found an 80 sportfire clutch on ebay. Will that fit my crankshaft? I know the 440's had the comet 102-c clutch but cant really find what the sportfires had for a clutch. As I speak the snow is melting... So far I have had dads 81 440 trailfire out a few times and put on 120 miles but it doesnt seem like enough. I hope to have my sled running before the snow is completely gone, I need to put in new pistons, gaskets, and crank seals. Thanks in advance, Ryker

I believe they had the Deere Branded 100-C on them. They should Interchange and the Sporty Clutch will probably wake your Trailfire up. I believe the Spring is different but dont hold me too it.

Sportfires and Trailfires both used the 102C but with different springs, purple on the TF and silver on the SF.

Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
I just went and looked at both sleds and the springs were both silver, I know dad had never changed the one on his so there will be no difference at all in the clutches, correct?

I don't have a service manual for each sled but the clutch weights are problably different.

Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
There is lots of clutch options.
I have a Sportfire that came with a Kawasaki Intruder clutch on it. Works great.
If you can find a Sportfire clutch, just stick it on and see how it works

Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
Ryker,
Welcome to the jdsleds.com page!
As the guys said, all the clutches on Kawi powered Deere's are Comet 102-C's with the exception of the 79 Trailfire 340, Spitfire and Snowfire that came with the Comet Duster 94-C. The Kawi spec Comet has a shallower offset than the Kioritz/CCW spec units for reference.
Pat and Ed are right that the clutch weights should be the only difference from a Trail to a Sportfire as most of the sleds used the silver spring. I have NOS (new old stock) wieght and pin kits at my place up in NY, but I will not be there until the end of the month, sorry.
Good luck with your sled, and remember that any of these sleds are due for crank seals if they have never been done...

My 80 LF has a 100-C on it and was wondering if this was original for this sled as it is in tough shape, doesn't sound like it is Sounds like it should have the 102-C, is that right?Mr. Deere wrote:I believe they had the Deere Branded 100-C on them. Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
Ryker,
Glad to hear you already did the seals. It's just something we like to make sure the newer guys know about. I have been told stories of NOS engines burning down due to old seals. Good luck with your sled!
Sledz,
The Comet 100-C was used on many of the 1974 Mid-mount Deere's, and was offered as a retrofit for the 73 JDX-8, 500 and 600 as Mod Kit 140 I believe. All 1980-81 Liquifires were built with a Comet 102-C, minus about 107 "A" stamped 1981 sleds that were updated to the TR-800 and HRS ignition at the factory level.
A 100-C should come very close to hitting the frame, and probably would under load as the bore depth is deeper than the Kawi spec 102-C's. The 102-C set up for an 80/81 Liquifire should have a purple spring (updated from the 1980 silver one) and B-1 weights.
I hope this helps,
-Joe Rainville

Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
Got the clutch in the mail yesterday, it fits at least. I am still waiting for my resleeved cylinders to come and then I will have it all back together and ready to ride. The snow around here is almost all melted now...

Re: Sportfire and Trailfire clutches
I am working on a 84 trail and I realized that it has a clutch on it off a sportfire. At least the the weights and spring are sportfire. Anyone have a idea how that will work on a trail? Thanks.
