1981 Liquifire Project

Post by pwgsx »

Well this guy was selling a Liquifire here in TX, yep, in TX, where it hardly ever snows. Me being bored I go and take a look and decide for $100, it would be a fun project. It will start but wont rev., guages work, Gas tank is shot, seat needs to be recovered. It was last tagged in 2004 so it did run not too long ago. Come to find out it is a 1981. I also got another sled with this one, an air cooled .....?? Not sure but it is missing a lot of stuff and is pretty much a parts sled.

I have yet to get a compression test on it but I am thinking it needs a new top end. In the meantime I would like to get the gas tank working, carbs cleaned and oil tank removed BUT I have some questions....

Where do you get the rubber bushing that is on the bottom back of the tank where the fuel line passes thru? The hole in the tank is 3/4 inch and the only fuel bushings I find are 1/2 inch????

What kind of oil do you run in these? Would Amsoil Interceptor work? I run that in my 2 stroke quad already.

Is it possible to go premix and remove the oil tank? IF so how is it done?

Thanks for the help, I know there will be many more questions to come!

The gas tank seal can be found at any John Deere dealer, those seals are still used today on lawnmowers. They are orange not black seals.

Any injectable oil is fine as long as it meets the TWC-3 standards.

Do not remove the oil tank and that system, it lubes the crank shaft bearings direct.

run a 50:1 mix in the gas tank with the oil injection system pumping oil also, do this for the first tank of fuel.

Man I have been looking all over for that gas tank plug and all I found was 1/2. Do you know the part # I would need from JD or what models use it?

Coming from a jet ski background, we would leave the oil tank with a little bit of oil in it to lube the bearings and plug the oil injection to the carbs and run pre mix. Too many oil pump failures... Am I asking for trouble trying this or does the oil pump on these sleds supply the carbs and crankshaft?

Guess I will keep it on then. I plan to use Amsoil Interceptor which is twc-3 oil unless there is something better out there? Next is a compression test to see whats wrong and go from there. I'll keep you posted as I will need help removing the flywheel and clutch.

Will do, I am going to try and pull the engine and see what type/model it is so I get the right parts but first I need to finish stripping down the junker sled of anything usable and scrap the frame. I dont see anyone wanting to buy it here locally. I also need to make some sort of frame with wheels to move this from the shed to garage and back easily.

There's usually manuals for sale on Ebay but you can always go to vintagesnow.com and view the manual. Here's a link to the 81 LF manual: http://vintagesnow.com/John_Deere_files ... Manual.pdf

As stated earlier, for parts I would try www.newbreedparts.com

As for technical assistance, you can always ask here and get an answer.

Best wishes Tex........

Would this work for a flywheel puller? http://www.harborfreight.com/46-piece-b ... 37824.html ????

I am still confused on how the clutch is removed or what puller I need. I removed the ?secondary? one with just a wrench but the one towards the front of the sled I cant get. What tool do I need without spending $100??
Thanks guys!!

Yes, that is the type of puller for the flywheel but you will need to get metric bolts long enough to thread into the flywheel about 1/4 in, no longer.
Here is the proper primary clutch puller.

When it comes to tools you get what you pay for.

A $13 puller from Harbor Freight will work a few times but it you run into a really tight stubbon flywheel it may well break.

I bought a $40 puller at my local auto parts store years ago and it still works like new.

You need the correct clutch puller. New Breed has some and otehr aftermarket companies do as well.

A genuine Comet brand puller is best and again it will last for years. Cost maybe $40.00 but money well spent.

Thanks for the replys and info. Do you know what metric thread size that might be on the flywheel? I see that clutch puller but is there another part that holds the clutch while I turn that in that I need or would a strap clamp or something hold it?

M6 bolts, take the recoil cup bolts to the store with ya and match them up. You will need an impact gun, electric or pneumatic. I dont think you will be able to hold onto that flywheel with any type of strap, they are on there TIGHT !! :bonk:
