83 Liquifire trouble

Post by baxter3 »

I recently purchased a 83 liquifire and am having problems getting it up to speed. I replaced the fuel lines, fuel pump, and just recently the broken throttle cable. It runs good at idle and going slow around the yard. As soon as I give it gas it bogs down, unless you give it some choke. It did the same thing before I found that the cable was broken.

-Follow the service manual specs for the carbs, check / clean them also.
-Syncronize both carbs together.
-Check the drive belt for wear, as ot wears it drops down inside the secondary. Follow the service manual for adjustment of the shims.
-Check the condition of the clutches.
If you do not have the service manual, click on this link.

If you are choking it to get it to run better, that is a sign of a lean condition. Have you checked the crank seals? The carb boots may also be cracked and pulling in air. You might want to check these so you don't toast a good motor.

Crank seals sound suspicious per your symptoms.

How would you check the crank seals?

When in doubt, change them out.

If there is still oil in the gearbox side, then that side seals should still be good. On the stator side, I usually spray a little choke and carb cleaner or ether and see if the engine revs up. Use the same process to check around the jug bases, and the carb flanges.

My neighbor gave me a hand and found nothing so far with the crank case. We did take the carbs apart again and I missed the jet associated with the floats and one was really dirty. We did see the rubber gasket on the main jet is falling apart. It runs better and goes better without choking, but still bogs after a bit. Can that o ring on the jet be causing this kind of trouble, or should I have the crank case looked at closer.
