Merc Snow Twister

Post by JDXspec »

Ok I know I almost bleed Deere but have heard that Snow Twisters are good too. Now Someone offered me a Mercury and asked if I was interested. Knowing that Twisters were a good race sled I said yes and went to look at it. Kinda surprised it was a Twister. It looks to be a 74 Twister with the 400 freeair Kohler and starburst heads. It has a new all rubber track with zero miles on it and only 271 miles on the speedo. Eng has new pistons and rings and nothing is beat up on it. This guy is the org owner and and has the paperwork of when he bought it. He raced it locally with success. I know thew variables but it is nice and just needs the dust cleaned off. Now the question, what should I offer for it? I don't need exact prices but a ball park range. (Twister fans, what is it worth?) I want to be fair but I'm not made of money. Thanks for the space.

I know twisters are like a dator. I did talk to another collector I know the 76 LC Twisters are more desirable. The owner is near retirement age and is ready to sell. (It sounds like) The only thing that is missing is the mud flap. The owner said Make an offer and would tell me what he wanted for it. (I asked him) The best part is its only about 30 miles from home. Thanks for the input.

The 74 and 1975 Sno-Twisters are still todays best bargains for any musclesled line of sleds. You can still get one of these for around $800 that is complete and in decent shape. It is not incommon to be able to snag one that needs a little TLC for the $600 range and a mint one in the range of $1200 to $1400.

Price does = condition and also what part of the globe you are located in . Here in East Central Minnesota these sleds are anything but rare and parts are plentifull.

You have seen the sled and know the balance of your checking account so good luck.

My $.02 would be; that it is a lot easier to buy them nice, than to make them that way.

If you are looking at a complete machine, in nice shape, that would be a big plus in my book.

my only comment is that its really a snow twister and not a trail twister. snow twisters i believe had a aluminum magnestim tunnel and trail twister had steel . other difference was porting on engine and carbs.

Hey Guys,

I don't think they made a Trail Twister until 75 Model Year, and if I remember correctly, the 74 Sno Twisters were all 400cc F/A twins. I "think" the TT was a 340 or 440 F/C motors for both 75 and 76, but I am not a Twister expert.

I do agree with you guys thought, Twisters are pretty cool, but you can't collect everything cool. Or, can you?! Darn Invaders and Interceptor parts keep sneeking in the Deere Barn...

Later,
-Rainville

An update to this thread:
I ended up bringing this Snowtwister home (although the deal is not completely completed yet) cked spark good there. cked compression 115 mag and 60 pto (Dry) oiled both sides well cked it again and it was 125 Mag and 115 pto so that should be good. I would like to know where someone might have parts. I mainly need the muffler can (stinger pipes are there) and a correct snow flap. Would anybody have these? I have pics to share. It doesn't look just too bad beside the dator either!

If you can come to terms on $, and you want it, seems like a no brainer to me.

Now my wife and friends might think differently, but, I ignore them.
