Liquifire #621, Part II, Take III
Back in the fall of 2010 my buddies helped me slam together a Liquifire to attempt the vintage class of the I-500. The Watersboy, Joe Sherwood, Mike Pilato, Tim Kudla, Sidekick Nick, Todd Myers (Stymie) and his friends Scott and Ryan and anyone else I could find assisted with the assembly effort.
At the track the night before the race in Thief River Falls, Kenny Hiens, Chris Dotzler and Wade Bennett helped with final preparation and got her running. The first time that sled saw fuel was Friday night before the race.
I would have never made it to the starting line without all their help, and I was thankful for it. But I left the coolant drain bolt loose and overheated the sled at mile six. "Team Deere" lost 4 Liquifires in the first 10 miles, much to the dissapointment off all of us. Still the best time ever.
The sled motor was rebuilt for this year's race, and a few of the unfinished pieces were completed and installed, like the modified front wheel kit and clutching updates.
Attempt two in February of 2013 was better, but lady luck had her way with me again. I nailed a rock in the bottom of the ditch near mile 6 and cartwheeled at 65 mph. The pan was bent up around the stearing shaft, so the sled would not turn left at all. It did go somewhat straight for the next 40 miles until she died out, and coasted to a stop around mile 45:

Re: #621, Part II, Take III
Aside from the damage from the rock that bent up the bottom of the bulkhead...
I found what finally stopped me was that my fuel line in the tank had swelled and fell off the fitting:
I did a quick repair, and prepared the sled to run the Vintage Challenge at the HOF the following weekend...

Re: #621, Part II, Take III
I finished the Vintage Challenge on #621, but not before tapping a tree on the way down from Fishtails. This picture also graced the main page of http://www.vintagesleds.com:
By the time I got the Liquifire back to Texas, she was looking pretty rough:
It was pretty obvious that a total tear down was needed to access and repair the damage to her...and add a few upgrades for next year.

Maybe she doesn't agree with you. Talk nice to her like in the paint scene during days of thunder.Lol Maybe she will get all the way to the finish next year. Does look rough, but its a deere. It can take it, and keep going.

Thanks Chris, she is a tough girl. But I am going to maker her better yet.
Once the motor was pulled, it was pretty clear the chassis took a couple of hard hits. It can be straightened out, but it would never be strong as new. She needed to be split, inspected for damage and rebuilt from the ground up.
After removing the drive train and steering I then drilled out about 100 rivets to split the tunnel (again) from the bulkhead.
Some good news was found upon inspection. The suspension took the rock hit just fine, nothing bent. The tunnel heat exchanger was also not damaged. Most of the race mods will be re-used on the reborn racer.

Re: #621, Part II, Take III
My friend Adam dug this 82 Liquifire out of a car junk yard in Colorado. Good new about CO sleds is the acute lack of rust. They don't use road salt there, and the dry mountain air does not promote rust. Colorado sleds are the snowmobiling equivalent of a rust free southern car.
The entire sled came apart with hand tools and no torch. The suspension cross shafts are all free, and little to no rust or corrosion.
This must have been a low mileage sled, as the track looks like new. The bulkhead, exhaust and Y-pipe are going to be used on the 80 racer, while the track, suspension, chassis parts and motor will be used to save a basket case 84 Liquifire that came with my rider 84.

With the 82 chassis separated, the bulkhead checked out very well. It will get reinforcing welding, sandblasting and either painted or powder coated flat black for use in the racer.
The original 80 racer tunnel is still in good shape, so it will be reused since it is also registered. The decals were stripped using Brock's method of heating behind them with a MAP gas torch until the decal slightly bubbles, then scraped and pulled off. Aircraft paint stripper took care of the rest of it.
After sanding and cleaning, I also plan to paint or powder coat the tunnel gloss black. Aside from a few technical upgrades, the entire sled is getting fresh paint and decals.
...more to come soon...

Re: Liquifire #621, Part II, Take III
Thanks Wade, hope to see you at the I-500 again next year. Nice job on finishing on your first try! (show off, LOL!)
To keep progress and projects rolling, I invested in a new shop compressor to run air tools, sand blasters and other such things:
I then spent a few hours with the new DA starting with 120 grit and progressing to 220 grit paper:
Next up is sending pictures to the powder coaters to get a quote on doing both the bulkhead (after it gets some reinforcing welding) and the tunnel. If it's cost affective, I will have both done instead of painting them...

So far progress this summer has been slow, but steady. Putting the new sand blaster to use cleaning up the new bulkhead, brackets and exhaust system.
This weekend will bring more progress like dropping off the bulkhead to the welders and bring parts to the powder coaters...

Re: Liquifire #621, Part II, Take III
Paul,
That was one solid piece of advice you gave a few years ago, and yes, I plugged both ends of the pipe.
For any of the newer guys, a few years ago Paul reminded everyone to cover the ends of exhaust pipes when sandblasting or bead blasting them. This prevents loose abrasive particles from finding their way back into the engine and trashing the motor.
Thanks Paul,
-Joe

The bulkhead came back from the welders with all the major stress points reinforced:
After this, she is ready to be cleaned and coated.
