Spitfire crank seals...
When a crank seal fails, what are some of the reasons for failure? I know age has to be one. Also could a bad bearing or one starting to get bad, cause seal failure? Just curious. Thanks.
Re: Spitfire crank seals...
Sure can. The cage can break apart and cut the seal from the inside out.
Another common failure is caused mositure build up in the crankcase and the lip seal spring rusts and breaks.
Then the lip is not held in contact with the shaft and your pistons cave in.
And a damaged (rough)bearing can run very hot which will bake the seal and casue it to melt or crack.
Or dirt and rust particals can get under the lip and cause it to deteriorate.
Another one is improper installation, like getting the seal in crooked or using the wrong tool to press or tap it in and damaging the lip.
When it comes to seals the best advise is "If in doubt , change them out".
