John Deere Snowmobile Book Update

Post by Dick Teal »

Many of you know that two of us have been writing the history of the JD snowmobile adventure at John Deere. The book is now available to pre-order at Amazon Books and they're saying delivery will be late December.

Search for Amazon Books and then search on the site for John Deere Snowmobiles and you will find the book and any available information. You can also pre-order the book there.

Book writing is a long process and I hope we captured the subject matter well and correct. We had a lot of help from many.

I haven't seen the completed book yet but will get one last chance to make simple corrections if necessary. When we turned the book over to the publisher in late April 2013 we lost control. They're the experts so hopefully they did a good job. Their artists can do a much better job than I would have if we had published it ourselves.

Please pass the word to any and all that could be interested.

I think this book would be a great father to son Christmas present.

Just finished placing my order and can't wait for this book to arrive. Thanks Dick , for putting so much effort into making it happen. I can well imagine how much work it must have been.

I am sort of wondering at what date the story begins. I realize the first JD sleds sold were 1972 models however I imagine things started happening long before that. I am especially interested in how it came about that John Deere began to show an interest in producing snowmobiles. Whose idea was it initially? How difficult was it to convince the bean counters that it would be a viable venture? Not sure if the book goes into that sort of stuff, but I hope it does. If not, it's no big deal as I'm sure there will be loads of interesting information in it.

The story starts with the Consumer Products decision that Bill Hewitt wanted to create and everything else you want to know. The good and the bad decisions along the way and more than most even think about. Racing is just a part of the story. How did snowmobiles effect Deere is discussed in the final chapters.

Hope you enjoy the trip; I sure did.

I suspect these things take more time than one thinks, but just wondering if anyone here has taken delivery of the book in question? Or notified of a shipping date by the publisher?

The last thing I heard was in October, it was backordered until December. Don't have it yet. Gotta tell you, I can't wait to read it.
