Pulling flywheel

Post by SIIaCanuck »

I've got one that is stubborn.

Any bright ideas or handy hints?

I've been trying not to use too much heat, I don't want to melt something. Maybe I've been too 'pansy' in my efforts.

The last one I pulled just took torqueing up on the puller, a couple of taps from the ball-peen hammer and it was free so maybe I've been spoiled.

crank it down, walk away, give it a day and crank down some more and walk away. Patience. The first one I ever took off took 3 days

I'm on day three of that system now. Adding Liquid Wrench and light heating to the mix as well.

Thanks.

You can heat it to 300 degrees. Only the hub. let no flame inside the flywheel. It helps to have the puller on it while you are heating. I had to do this to quite a few engines. If you don't want to go that far 225-250. It will not hurt the stator unless you hold the torch in one spot or let the flame into the flywheel. Think about this, The stator is attached to the crank case farther inside than what the flywheel is. It is not touching the flywheel, So it will take longer for heat to get to it. When I pop mine off I can lay my hand on the stator. Can also hit the puller with a hammer and it should pop off unless it really is stuck.

Never underestimate the power of a BFH.

A single strike with a 3 lb'r well centered on a torqued up puller will make it release.

Just had an invader apart. Stripped the 6 mm holes in the flywheel so we tapped them to larger size and stipped those. We ended up wrecking flywheel and stator but were able to save crank. I work on these for a living and have never seen such a stubborn wheel. But yes, good heat directly on the hub, impact, strike, repeat. Hope you have some luck.

Day 4 and still tightening, heating and hammering.

Had to reinforce my puller, I was bending the arms.

Find a harmonic balancer.

No flywheel should take that long... How hot are you heating it? Remember to heat only the hub and not the shaft. Or they will both expand. You may have runines your flywheel by using the puller... Did you put the arms on the outside or in the little slots just outside the hub?

Harmonic balancer puller. Must be a wimpy one.

I've just heated the hub but no action yet. It could be that I'm being too cautious.

I could just accept wrecking the flywheel, I've got two spare. Just don't want to if I can avoid it.

Biggest mistake made in yanking these off is having the 6 m bolts not locked tight against the flywheel . Measure the gap between the puller and the flywheel and put some kind of spacer in there so you can tighten the fingers to the flywheel. Otherwise you are just bending a twisting the 6m bolts and not putting pressure on the taper.

What kind of torch are you using? Any idea of how hot you are getting it?

How'd you guess? 'We're not happy until you are!'

In this case, it's not the puller but the flywheel that's the problem. I've got this thing seriously torqued up and it's not budged yet.

I've only got a good propane torch at the moment. I'd prefer Oxy/Propane to heat quickly but don't have one handy at the moment.
