Vintage Challenge Warm Up Ride...

Post by JoeRainville »

As Lindner described in detail in his thread about the Ride with the Champs, a few of us got together and rode Friday morning before the Ride with the Champs. Most of us have done the Poker Run in years past, and it's a fun event that honors the Ambers and makes a generous donation to the Hall of Fame.

But, this year I was planning to do the "guides ride" up to Fishtails on modern sleds, as I can always use the refreasher course of the trail north. As no surprise, I had the spend the morning getting my sleds registered and such, so that ride was out. Lindner mentioned that they were thinking of taking a ride to put down some miles to Bents Camps. That sounded like fun, so I dropped off Cari Deerest at the HoF to help Jamie with the cookout, and I headed back to the Whitetail to gear up and pull Cari's Sprintfire out of the trailer.

Before Wade and Mindy Bennett and Brian and Katy Lindner and I left, a few of the newer members asked to join us, include Lincon, Mark and Kyle. So the 8 of us headed north toward the Cisco Lake Chain and Bent's Camp. The ride up was fun, and we arrived with minimal issues once I re-installed my carb fuel bowl plug on the side of Hwy C.

We celebrated our arrival to Bent's Camp, about 40 miles from the Whitetail, with a nice hot lunch. Lots of BS'ing and laughs with this crew.

With the closing of Cisco Lake Resort, we lost our regular fuel stop on the way north to Lake Gogebic and Fishtails for the Vintage Challenge. Once Dan Larson let us know about that, Brian contacted the owner of Bent's to see if they wouldn't mind being our new fuel stop. Craig, the owner, was happy to help us out. While we ate, we verified our arrival the next day with more sleds looking for fuel.

As we fueled up and started to head back to the Whitetail, we got taking about how Katy Lindner did the ride on Brian's 73 Model 400, with bogies. She held a moderate, but very steady pace with that sled, until the ignition started randomizing the path to ground.

Image

Afterwards, this bogie thing got Brian and I talking. Additionally, Sidekick Nick Freatman and I were talking about how Kevin Campbell was the only sole brave enough to ever try the 150 mile Vintage Challenge on a bogie sled, his JD Model 800. Nick said we should get some bogie sleds ready for next year. Not sure if I want to run one on the Challenge, but we have an idea...

On Friday morning, February 12th, 2016, we are going to run "Katy's Bogie Bash to Bent's" It just going to be a fun run with no rules, except bogie wheel sleds are encouraged. They don't have to be Deere sleds, but of course Deere's are encouraged to join us for an 80 mile ride or so, depending on how many turns Lindner misses on the way back. We plan to assemble at the Whitetail around 8:30 to pull out by 9:00.

So you have another reason to save a classic bogie machine, and you have a year to do it. Hope a few of you guys join us for this fun retro run...

Joe & Brian,

I made my reservation, so at this point I'm planning on attending next year. I'm actually planning to arrive on Thursday afternoon, so I can get trail passes & work out sled issues. I'll definitely have the 800 on Katy's Bogie Bash. Sounds like a lot of fun. I'm really debating on what I should do for Saturday however, but I've got time to think about that. I'm having trouble with my El Tigre right now, but hope to get it all worked out by the end of this winter. Would that sled be able to make this run even though it isn't boggie? I have a buddy that will be traveling with me, and is a relative novice at sledding as well. Not sure the reliability, so this sounds like it would be more suited. Thoughts? Thanks.

Jep , here are my thoughts , after the ride Friday you will have a much better perspective about your sled and riding it on the trails. It will help you to make up your mind about Saturday , personally I think it may depend on snow / trail conditions . If snow is good it should be a great ride wade

Thanks Wade, Yes that will help with the decision. If it's really rough, I don't think either I or the sled will hold up too well for the VC. But if there is a lot of snow and good trails, I'll probably go ahead as long as I didn't experience breakdowns the day before.

One of the first things we learned about the JD collectors back in 2007 when we first got together at the SHOF, is that we like to ride. Perhaps more than any other group, as nine years later we are still showing up to ride in large numbers.

This ride is going to be a little different. Katy likes to ride, but she does not like to ride as if it is a timed event. So, the Bogie Bash is going to be an old school trail ride. No hanging off the seat heroics in the corners, mid-mount comfortable speed is the goal.

It's about a 2 hour ride up there, and the trail is a mix of conditions. We start out with some ditch banging, then some trails to Sayner. North of Sayner we have two nice lake runs, some trails, some road running, back to trails, and we are there! It is a quick 2 hours. When we got back, Wade said his odometer said we had ran 81 miles. Take out the detour I made, and it is a bit shorter than that.

This was the longest ride Katy had ever been on, and she had some reservations about it going in. Afterward she told me that the distance was OK, the speed was OK, she had enjoyed the whole thing. Even the last few miles on the end of the rope had not spoiled it.

The intention is to get back to the HOF in time to socialize and have a brat, and be ready for the Amber Meet and Greet. This one is about fun and camaraderie. We'll pound it hard on Saturday, but Friday will be our day to just enjoy the ride and our time together.

brian , your last comment jarred the cob webs loose in my head , Saturday I watched my odometer both directions and its right at 35 miles one way , according to my sled , its another 40 or 41 to fishtails from bents camp , one way . however the hof advertises the ride as 162 miles total , so who knows for sure , but for sure its a casual 2 hour ride with a nice lunch with pretty scenery and gas to boot if we are there by 11:30 , back on the trail by 1:00 this puts us in in plenty of time to be sociable wade

Since this is going to compete/conflict with the Poker run, will there be a fundraising element to it as well for the HOF?

That is something we have talked about. We are not trying to be in competition with the poker run, nor is there any goal to pull participation from it. This is different in distance and speed.

Nothing is written in stone, but we were thinking we should ask for participants to purchase a raffle ticket or make a cash contribution to the HOF. This would be voluntary, as the poker run is.

We are open to ideas as well.

I shouldn't have used the word compete, it's just the first thing that popped in my head. Even just a 50/50 drawing would do the job, but maybe someone can think of something more creative.
