This year when I have tried to start the sled I have found that when the starter engages the engine, it doesn't always retract properly. Perhaps every other time when trying to start the engine I will get a slight grinding sound. If I pull the rope to turn the engine over it sounds like the drive retracts properly.
The starter was completely apart this past week and it looks to be in really good shape. The entire starter was cleaned and I made sure to lubricate the gear end of the starter. It seems to move freely. As far as I can tell, it seems like it should work fine.
Any suggestions?

Adam,
The starter drive is to close to the flywheel or drive is sticking and not returning properly. There should be shim installed between the starter and the engine housing to move it back.

When I removed the starter I noticed the shim you talk about. I put it back in when the starter was reinstalled. I lubricated the drive end of the starter hoping that would take care of the problem last week.
Is there any other maintenance to the starter that would be necessary to ensure proper functionality of the drive end? I notice there is a spring there - does the spring ever wear out? Could two shims be used?

Adam,
I would remove and disassemble the starter and clean all the old grease/oil from the end of the shaft/starter drive. The spring is on the light side and actually over lubing will cause it to stick and not retract. A dry type lub should be used.
