Taking a vintage sled on a long haul!!

Post by KawiSpitfiretony »

I was wondering how many people took their Deere or other vintage sleds for a long trip on the trails

I know there not the comfiest sleds with all of its 1inch suspension

My brother in law got me a OFSC trail pass for my 1980 spitfire I'm just kind of nervous how far it would make it..

Bring plugs and belts that about all I can do with it

I've ridden my '83 Liquifire over 200 miles in a day. Do the proper mechanical maintenance, bring some tools, plugs, and a belt, and you should be fine. The question more becomes how much can your body take!

Tom is right, I put 170 miles on my 83 LF last year in the Northwoods of Wi. If it is mechanically sound and the trails are good I wouldn't be scared to ride it as long and far as you can. Along with what Tom said I do carry a tow rope just in case. Funny thing is I have used it to tow a modern sled and not had to be towed yet. I probably just jinxed myself, lol

I've done several hundred miles a weekend many times, but that's after a complete rebuild - all new chassis & suspension bearings, any wear parts checked & replaced, engine rebuilt. I wouldn't try to do it with a barn-fresh sled, that's where you're going to have problems.

The trails are a lot smoother during the week. They get pretty beat up on the weekends. Where are you riding? I see your from hamilton. The big hydro line just south of the escarpment is a great place to ride and work out any issues. If we get some snow!!!!!!!

Steven/Tony, I'm from Hamilton here. Give me a holler if you ever want to get together and ride. That is, IF we get snow around here!

Fresh rebuild and everything gone through will eliminate potential issues, but even so, I lost 3 bolts in 25mi, it was rough though and I was hauling the mail ;)

New, old, doesn't matter much. They are machines.....if it has tires or tracks, it will be trouble sooner or later.

Yeah, yeah, I know I left one candidate for trouble out, but I was being polite on a public forum.

Ditto, much the same as your reply, Lloyd. All goes well we will see you Sunday. Don't look for the old Sportside. Keep your eye out for a newer white short box GMC
