HELP with KEC 440/22 cranks seals

been restoring a 76 cyclone has a kec 440/22 motor in it. ran really good but had sat for a few years. i want to replace crank seals for good insurance. motor is out of sled. is it best to split the halves to replace theses? im guessing yes... what sealant are you putting on the halves to put halves back together? do you put any grease on the inside of the seal? white lithium? am i answering my own questions? lol

Matt,
You can replace the seals without splitting the case on /22 style engine. It is explained in the service manual. If you are unsure of the condition of the crank bearings, it is good practice to split the case and inspect everything. The seals go in easier if the case is split, you simply pull the crank bearings up out the journals slightly and pull the seals off. I generally coat the inside seal lip with 2 stroke oil before sliding them back on.
You want to use Yama-Bond , kawa-Bond or any other brand of anarobic sealer crankcase sealer.

Decided to split the case tonight. Glad I did! PTO seal has a tear on the inside where it wraps around the spring. Replaced both seals. Bearing look good. One thing I noticed was the lack of sealant on the two halves. There was hardly any. I was going to post pics but it said my pics are too large to post??? Not sure how to make them smaller (pictures on phone and trying to post through my phone). Bearing looked good. One thing I did notice before I turned the motor upside down was that a few of the smaller head bolt nuts were loose and 2 of them actually were almost off. Should I be OK tightening them up or should I replace head gaskets too?

You're probably OK to torque them properly if the rest of the nuts were still tight. Check your compression afterwards if you have or can borrow a gauge.

They didn't have much crankcase sealant from the factory. Not much is needed.

On your phone, if you are going to post the photo online, take the picture with the camera on a lower resolution setting. The size needs to be under 1000kb.
