cylinder replating/recoating

Post by buckeyetrailfire »

Has anyone had cylinders replated from Millennium Tech or US Chrome ? Your opinion and experience with these companies?

Thanks,
Mark

I've used millennium and got the jdsleds.com discount. I was very pleased with how it turned out. I don't remember the exact price but I'm thinking about $150-$200 per cylinder.

Mark,

I have nothing but good things to say about working with Millenium Tech on replating Kawi jugs. I have had several sets of Liquifire jugs done with very good results. When one of my jugs was 'soft' and the acid eroded the gasket surface they did another jug for free after I overnighted it. I suggest lapping the gasket surfaces after the jug come back, not before.

As a testament to how much better nicasil jugs hold up over the original chrome, with over 500 miles on the motor from the I-500 and Vintage Challenges, it still looks like new in side, with zero scuffing of the pistons. Of course make sure your rings are compatible. WISECO offers several material choices for rings for example.

I hope this helps,

Hi Mark,

I have to check what PN I used, but it was a "Pro-Lite" piston that might have been the Invader PN. WISECO offeres several ring materials, and offer a standard iron ring for use on chrome bores. For nicasil, you typically want a moly, chrome or TI-nitride ring.

Kawi Liquifire motors have a tendancy for the center of the head, where the copper 'fire ring' gasket sits, to pull up, away from the jug. The top of the jug does the opposite, where the center of the jug round the top lip of the bore tends to creep downward, away from the head. This make re-sealing a used motor a real PIA.

After the jug come back from coating, I tape sand paper down to a surface plate, and use a little isopropal alcohol or cutting fluid to help sand or lap the top of the jug and the bottom of the head flat. I usually start with a 320-400 grit paper, and make a figure 8 pattern. Makes re-sealing the motor much easier.

I hope this helps,
-Joe

PS: Next time I do this, I should document the procedure for an FAQ...
