Hi All,
Got a Spitfire for the family for XMas... It has the Kohler motor... Starts, runs about fifteen feet, once the load picks up, it spews white smoke and dies. Idles fine... Not sure what gives... Thoughts? Want to get it running for the kids asap...
~Frustrated...
TIA,
Chris

Re: Merry Christmas
Oh Chris, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if the engine has not received new crank seals in the last five years or so you really need to start there. Once that's done you have gone a long way to eliminate burning down the pistons. It's not a horrible job but a necessary one. When that job is done then things such as carb overhauls, fuel line replacements (especially inside of the fuel tank, and other small jobs can be done. Keep in mind that this is a 34-38 year old sled and that just sitting around is as bad as anything. Again, don't want to be a doomsdayer and hope you'll stick around this sport of vintage John Deeres for a long time but you need to be aware of the pitfalls. All I can see is that you're from Illinois and there's a lot of great JD'ers there so hopefully one of them can jump in to try to help you. Best wishes!

Merry Christmas everyone!!
Re: Merry Christmas
DA,
Is that something a weekend DYI' er can do? Also, in the interim, how many turns should each of the adjustment screws on the butterfly carb be? I put the idle mixture screw at one turn out from seated, and the pilot jet was fully seated... That doesn't seem right to me...
If the seals are too much for me to tackle, what would be reasonable for a mechanic to charge to get her running smooth?
TIA,
Chris
