1974/5 JDX gas tank pick-up

Post by spencer60 »

Lots of fun to run the old JDX4 but can be a hassle getting started. Don't use it alot so I took out original large plastic tank and replaced it with a
2 1/2 gallon gas can. Drilled hole for the screw in gas pick-up assembly. might leak around there a bit, but I can seal that better. My question is about the vent on the pick-up. It's pretty rough but I haven't checked it for function. Actually, I am not sure how to check it. Does anyone sell new assemblies or is there a vent valve of some sort I could use separately and just close off the original?
I had an inline primer bulb on it and that helped to get the gas to the carb. It got too stiff to work so I've gotten a new one and will put that in this afternoon I hope. If sled sits a few weeks, I have to remove plugs and use a little fuel/oil mix and starter fluid. Would it be possible to drill hole in plastic from airbox to Walbro carb and put a closable port in it to sqirt in fuel and starter fluid and not have to take plugs out?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Greg in Crescent, IA. PS: Omaha area riders are welcome to ride at my place. Have some nice hills and trails.

If you contact Joe Rainville here on the list, I think he has a bunch of those '75 fuel fittings with the vent. You need a fuel pick-up on the line in the tank that has a check ball in it. This prevents the fuel from running back to the tank.

I have never found putting a squeeze bulb in the line to help much, and it is just something to fail and suck air. I have one I temporarily install on first start of the winter. Some guys have installed primer systems, which typically have a discharge fitting in the isolator between the carb and manifold.

I do not know why you would remove the original plastic tank :bonk:
