Fun at ERX

Post by 400brian »

Just about the time you think you have seen everything, something pops up that has a guy shaking his head. Nick Freatman brought a 78 Liquifire Cross Country out from New York to the Midwest Ride In at ERX. I have some history with this particular sled, as Rainville rode this sled on the first Vintage Challenge ride in 2009.

Nick was riding the sled on the grounds when he could smell gas very strongly. He thought the fuel pump had blown a gasket, but when he pulled the carbs and airbox off, and got the fuel pump out to get a look at the issue, he found this.

If you look closely you can see the inlet fitting has fell out of the fuel pump. So the reason he could smell fuel was than the contents of the fuel tank was simply flowing out via gravity . I myself do not like where the pumps were mounted on the 76-78 sleds, as they are so difficult to get to.

Nick ran up to the swap and found a vendor with a bunch of old Mikuni pumps, and bought the body with the fitting in it. He had the pump fixed and the sled running shortly after.
