shock help

I need to replace the shock on my 83 TF, would like to get a stiffer one if possible. I've never dealt with them on any type of vehicle other than saying replace them. Could someone point me in the right direction to get started? Do I need to know length? If so, where do you measure? Is there some sort of resistence measurement?
