I think my shocks are on wrong

Guys:
I have been looking at several pics, and notice that the shock placement on the ski's on my 73 X8 are bolted down and on the outside of the ski. I have seen pics and most of them show the shocks on the inside of the ski's. What is the proper placement of the shock on the ski and what or does it affect anything being in the outside position?

thats correct for both 73 and 74 jd dealerships still sell the bolts and proper nuts for those shocks and come nicely cadium plated too
