What is the best method for cleaning clutches and what should you use? Also what type of lube should you use on them?

If you not going to completly disassemble the clutch, then spray clean with either carb or brake cleaner will work fine. Make sure to remove the clutch cover no matter what clutch you have (Comet or Salsbury). On Comets once the cover is off & spring tension is gone, inspect both sheaves for cracks, inspect spider & spider buttons for to much play, inspect for worn rollers or flat spots, inspect clutch cover bushing, inspect movable sheave bushing for to much play, remove weights & pins from movable sheave (NOTE watch for little thrust washers on each side of weight), inspect weights for worn or oblong holes & or damaged ramp surfaces, inspect pins for worn areas where weights move on. reassemble with replacement parts as needed & lube with either Comet clutch lube, powder graphite or NAPA has a aerosol graphite that goes on liquid & dry's very rapidly & sticks to the parts, (I like this product as it is easy to use & doesn't get all over everything like the powder does) Keep all lube frome belt surfaces.

For Salsbury clutchs remove cover, unlatch spring tension on all rollers, remove & inspect drive plate (retractor) for cracks or wear, both sheaves for cracks, movable sheave for worn bushing, inspect roller arm assemblies, for bad rollers, worn pin holes & broken springs, worn pins & pin bushings. Inspect cover for cracks or badly worn roller surfaces. also ck for worn plastic spline liners that the moveable sheave slides on that mount to the sationary sheive. Reassemble with replacement parts as needed & lube with graphite type lubricant.
