I'm slowly getting around to enhancing the performance of the XC. I've got an SLP single pipe, SLP boost bottle, Boysen Reed set and spacers, SLP airbox mod, and a TEAM secondaryclutch on the way right now. I'm wondering if anyone has done this to their 700 non-ves. I'd like to get the jetting close now instead of waiting til it's cold out. I also don't want to drop money into a million different jet combos to find the right one. I'm also wondering if all of these mods would increase gas mileage. That's one of the main things I'm going for here. Usually increased flow=better performance and fuel economy. I talked to the guys at the local Polaris dealership, and they told me to run it, check the plugs, jet it....run it check the plugs and so on. (Which is what I was trying to avoid having to do in the first place.) It will probably be run in MN and the UP in Michigan from -10 degrees to +30 degrees. Mostly in the 0-10 degree range. I should have gone with the brand new 2005 VES 800 they had sitting next to it, but a 5 year old sled in perfect condition with 400 miles for $2500....you can't beat that.

P.S. Will the EPI primary spring work with the team secondary, or to I have go back to stock? I like EPI kit because it stays in the powerband longer, and engages smoother. I'd like to keep the primary set up how it is.

i have no idea what ves stands for or means but from what i can tell of your mods youll get better performance allright but i doubt better gas mileage.
from the mods you mentioned i would think upping the primary jet by 2 sizes would be a good start.
i do wonder if the sled has power valves on it? if so cleaning them carefully and regularly work wonders on polaris.
is it a triple twin 4 stroke 2 stroke does it have flat slide carbs or round? just a few questions to help us figure out approx what jetting to go with.

VES is power valves. Variable Exhaust System. Mine was built the year before they put them in the 700/800 sleds. It's a 700cc 2-stroke American Twin with twin 40mm Flatslides. I haven't torn into the carbs yet, but as of right now (This past winter) it is running a little rich when it gets above 10 degrees. That airbox mod, and the reed cage spacers (They push the reed cages out of the intake tract about .150") are going to increase air volume, so richer is the way to go.....just how much richer. The tech manual says to run 87 or 89 Non-Oxygenated.....not easy to find. I usually run premium to avoid detonation, and get a more complete burn. The problem I had all winter was that somehow the choke bar between the carbs would loosen itself and engage about 1/2 choke in the middle of a ride. Once I troubleshot this it ran a lot better but still rich. Thanks for the input so far Rodimus. I think my idea about the gas mileage was more wishful thinking than anything else. It's hard to take it places when gas stations are sometimes 75-100 miles apart, or where you just assume that a half tank will do the job.

hmm that helps flat slides are tricky to fiddle with for jetting if its not just right you get a heck of a bog. its funny but the ufo kits for round are easier to play with in comparison.
i also guess your key switch wouldnt have the regular and premium settings of the other sleds..
the box mod is ok but use the polaris thin screen to prevent anything from getting in there.
while i have fixed the m10/12 suspensions and power valves cleaned carbs fixed wiring i havent really played with modding these engines i know the stuff your talking about if i remember right the boost bottles have jetting recommendations with them. without going out to a friends shop and doing some reading ill have to pass for now.
ves= power valves ouch i should have known that.
also some 700 have the rack on back that i have seen people strap down gas tanks on.

The SLP boost bottle says jetting changes are not required, but the idle rpm must be lowered. There is a noticable difference in how evenly the engine runs with that boost bottle. I'm sure I can find a performance shop that does these mods on a regular basis and send them an e-mail. Getting the ripsaw track in is my top priority with this sled. The dealership switched the original 1" polaris track with a .86" Arctic Cat track. I tore it to shreds in about 1500 miles.

Jack-
I'm on the road but if my memory serves, you have Keihin 39 D's. SLP has an upgrade kit for the 39's. The boost bottles do not come with any jet specs and never will. By providing jet specs the manufacturer is assuming liability on your engine.
Also a must for your sled is an engine push arm, it forces the clutch to stay true under acceleration, a design flaw from the factory. Also a great upgrade is a high flow airbox lid.
There is no problem mixing slp and epi springs.

The 700 SKS used the Keihns. The 500-800 XCSP's used Flatslide Mikunis. The airbox lid is going on for sure. I see that there are a variety of the push arm brands. I was kind of wondering if I should get one. Is there any brand preference you have greg, or would any one do the job? When I bought the sled, the dealership stuck spark plugs in the boost bottle holes. I'm assuming that it had one before I bought it because usually if the reed bodies are unmolested there are either plastic plugs in those holes, or you have to cut them out to install the boost bottle. My buddy saw dramatic results in the smoothness of acceleration with a pipe and airbox mod on his 800. These 700s are rough running machines from the factory, but they go like a bat out of hell when you get them dialed in correctly. I'm trying to get it to be a better trail sled. The first step is getting the .800 Arctic Cat track out and getting the ripsaw in there. The damn thing ripped the AC track to pieces this winter because it never got traction with those tiny little lugs.

I'm a dealer for EPI and SLP - I can hook you up with all the mod items. I'll scan some pages and forward them.
