Mono Ski

Post by 427cobra »

Ok,

I was home for the weekend and saw something quite different. It looked like an old moped with a ski for a front tire and a long thin snowmobile track for a rear tire. It was a manufactured machine (not home built). I know I've seen them before I just can't remember the name!

It was for sale and I forgot to take a look at it. From the road it looked to be in good shape. Was wondering if these are collectable and what they usually sell for.

Sounds like a Chrylser Sno-runner. They are collectable and show up to a lot of shows.

They're fun little toys, best suited to hard pack trails. They'll top out a wee bit over 30 mph when conditions are right. They were built from about 79-82. Here's a pic of mine.

Actually, Paul, I do have a big red barn on my property. But the only things you'll find in it are my Polaris Widetrak, a homebuilt mini bike that my bro built for me when I was a kid, about a thousand snowmobile trail signs, and a dozen or so farm cats. If you wanna come check it out, wait til October when I begin washing the mud and crud off of the trail signs that we neglected to remove from the trail til after the snow melted. Your assistence would be much appreciated. There might even be a beer or two in it for you.

Yes, Bob.....I do try and put 20 miles or so on it each year. I usually don't ride it much until late March because the warm/cold temps in the late winter tend to put a bit of a crust on the snow enabling the Sno Runner to go almost anywhere. In the dead of winter, it's pretty useless in the fluffy snow conditions....it gets stuck quite quickly in anything more than 4-5 inches of powder. The good part is that when you get stuck, you just pick it up and turn it around and scoot back in your track (it only weighs about 75 pounds with a full tank of gas). I've ridden some on the groomed trails, but it feels a tad skittish on real hardpack (and especially hard to control on ice). The nicest place to ride it is on a packed trail that has had about 2 or 3 inches of fresh snow dumped on it. In those conditions, it handles great and you can get creative carving corners. I put the high performance (thin) head gasket in it last winter and that seemed to give it way more power than the stock one. I'll see if I can find a pic of me actually riding it and if I do, I'll post it.
