rear suspension 79 exciter

Post by WatertownBob »

the rear suspension is locked in the down posistion. I took the 6 bolts out and the slide assy came out without removing the drive shaft. Cleaned up and greased all the cross shafts. Trying to install the slide assy with out removing the drive shaft but can't seem to get the rear attatch points to line up track not letting the assy get in place...

any tricks to this or will I need to remove the drive shaft to get the slack in the track.

If i do what is the procedure for the proper track tension during the reinstall.

Thanks for any advice

Hi Bob, No need to remove thr drive shaft. Have the rear axle adjusters all the way loose, install the front W arm to tunnel bolts, pop the rear springs up and out of their saddles to relieve rear spring tension, you should then be able to get the front bolt on each side installed for the rear mount and then twist the rear suspension pivot up to get the second ones in. It may take a little prying in just the right spot but if you study it you should be able to figure it out. Once all 6 bolts are started tighten them up, snap your springs back in place and align your track.
Good Luck, Phil

Thanks for the info SRXMOD.

do you just mark where the tensioners where for the rear axel or is there a procedure to set proper track tension?

Thanks again this web site is a real tool for vintage sled info.

I got the rear suspension all put back together. I am now on to the engine.
soak and blow out the carb. degrease and inspect the everything under the hood. drain the gass and install all new gas hose.

there anything else? this machine had been setting for 4 or 5 years.

Compression is 125 per side.

:)

does this engine have reed valves or is it piston ported?

How often should some one give reed valves attention?

Do the crank seals ever give problems on these old yamahas?

Thanks for all the help
