Read where the 79 trailfires were set up to run rich from the Factory. Im working on my 440 carb [vm-34] and it has a 760 main jet in it. Ive seen a couple posts on here where it said a 230 main jet should be used. Quite a differance there,Is it possible the 79 440 trailfires came stock with the 760 in it?

Thanks Rich. It looks like the carb was switched over from previous owner. Another thing is i go to take out the pilot jet & the slot on top has been rounded off. Should i try removing it with a screw extractor, or leave it in see how it runs with the main jet switched out.Ill see what size needle & valve it has. Ive got a sz. 2.5 jet above the needle seat ,Hope thats alright.

I'm not so sure anyone even makes a 760 jet for a mikuni carb, I thought the largest was around 500?????? what were they burning straight Alcohol??
Yes I would use what ever means necessary to get the pilot jet out & replace with a NEW 25 (std) 0r 30 pilot jet

Turns out the main jet was a 160, [looks like 760 with mag. glass]. Got the pilot jet extracted, Picked up the right jets. Should be good to go. Hope theres no engine damage from last owner using the leaner jet. Thanks jon

I have Mikuni Main Jets up to size 800 - The larger jets are common in Motorcycle applications. With a 760 in his VM, I'm thinking it may have been donated by a motorcycle.

I never was into those Crotch rockets, too afraid of road rash, & hell I can't even ride a bicycle any more with out crashing that, so I better off staying away from 2 wheels & a motor..

I cant get an idle of any kind unless i turn my air screw in all the way. This is a 79 kawi motor. Ive replaced the main jet to a 230, Pilot jet to a 25. It does still have the 3.0 throttle slide, 6f9 needle ,2.5 inlet seat. Do i also have to replace the last three mentioned, Or will this engine idle with a bigger pilot jet?

Sounds to me like the carbs are still dirty, clean/spray all little orifice's out with carb cleaner, there are a few in the front intake of the carb that might be plugged or the ones inside of the float bowl, also did you use NEW pilot jets these plug real easily & sometimes can't be cleaned.

Your right Bob ,It should be a 1.5 , But seems to me it should still idle with the 25 pilot jet. It runs fine at 1/4 -full throttle. As far as i know if your air screw is turned in all the way for idle , A bigger pilot jet is needed. Carb has been cleaned three times & blown out with air. Only thing i can think of is maybe the air jets plugged ,Im going to check that. Any one heard of a mikuni carb that has the air screw near the motor that you turn in to lean? Its not the case in my carb, But was told they are out there.

If you have a set of Original Mikuni VMs then you have the air screw maybe a half inch down from the carb boot. BOB

Guess it could be a bad mag seal, pto ,intake & crank all checked fine for air leaks. Fuel pumps good, Same for pulse line. Dont know what the 1st trailfire used for air jet,Maybe its to big? Im assuming air is drawn through the air jet ,to pilot jet & then idle . Also is a leak down test the only way to check for leaks on the mag seal?
