I bought an Indy 400 at haydays. It needs a throttle cable and some other misc. parts. I was told it was an '86, but I'm not so sure. The problem I'm having is with exactly what year it is. The serial sticker looks like someone took a grinder to it. I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. It's got a 1990 Indy 500 hood, (black and light blue). I have to make sure of the year because some of the parts are 84-88 and 89-93. It has just shy of 12,000 miles, so it's probably seen a lot of different parts over the years. The rings are beyond worn. It's actually in decent shape for 12,000 miles. Here's some features it has that may help.
-red trailing and radius arms
-1989 seat (grey sides and red top)
-bumper accents are red
-serial plate is the clear sticker like the current polaris sleds have
-rear idler is red (not silver like the 1986)
-tank cover is a separate piece from the seat cover
-old style gages (mount in the hood, not a pod)
-headlight is mounted to the hood.
-Holes for both hand and thumb warmers (1 of them says "ACC" above it.)
Are there any other distiguishing features to look for? I'm going to cross reference the liscence #'s at the DNR tomorrow. It was last liscenced in 2003, so it should be on record.

Look on the engine and you should find an info plate somewhere (usually on the right hand side or sometimes on the front of the crankcase). It should state the engine model number as well as the engine serial number. Let me know what you find and I'll see if I can figure out the year of the engine...but who's to know if it's the original engine? Grinding marks on the chassis serial number plate often indicates a hot sled......so I hope you didn't pay much for it because you may find when you go to the DNR tomorrow, that somebody wants their sled back.

I only paid $50. I'm thinking that the engine and chassis came together, but everything else was added as it was broken or worn out. The pan has a bunch of exhaust burn throughs, and the IFS subframe has been cobbled in a few spots. I wanted an IFS trail sled. I'm not sure this one will be safe even after I re-bush the front end and rebuilt the brake system. My other thought as I saw the abundance of stripped chassis' at haydays was that someone stripped a sled to the nuts, sold the bulkhead, and the next buyer put on parts that were laying around, and figured the serial no longer represented the model, so they ground off the tag. It's a long shot, but I don't want any part of a stolen sled. I'll get that engine serial for you tomorrow.

DMV says it's an '86. The only thing '86 about it is the tunnel and motor. Which, as of tomorrow won't even be that pile of crap that looks like a motor.
