Liquifire 440 Performance Advice

Post by deerefanatic »

Hi guys,

Since I will be rebuilding my motor on my 78 sometime in the future, I thought I'd ask if there are any options I should do to up the performance some... I'm not after a full blown race sled, but any little things I could do to up the power/torque a little.. Give it some more gusto......

I've thought of K&N Airfilters or UNI Snowpods vs the stock airbox; and a powerjet kit for the carbs (been told that it's not too effective though...)

I know that tuned pipes would be great, though they're pretty hard to find and really $$$..........

Anything else I should look into... I figure if I'm gonna spend the money to rebuild, I might as well get a little power out of it....

Is having the head shaved worth looking into?

Like I said before, I'm not looking for a full blown race machine that barely lasts a season..... I'm not afraid to have a premium-fuel-only machine, but still want an all-around fun to trail ride, fun to cruise around on machine........

Let me know if this is all just a pipe dream......

:D I'm coming from the diesel crowd where performance is a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too deal...........

If I were going to do this & it was a 78 440 Liquifire, I would put Mikuni 36 mm round slide carbs (NOT THE POWER JET TYPE) use the stock air box (made to accept the 36 mm carbs to look stock) & a set of Dator Pipes & muffler. A 78 Liquifire or Cyclone suspension & a Kimpex all rubber track (like the CC or 80+ liquifire only 121" in length)
A set of Cross Country Handle Bars, & a New Lite weight Joe Rainville 78 Liquifire Hood (if he decides to have some made) hint hint hint....

Just my $.0685 worth

So you guys think the stock airbox flows enough air? that's cool....

Rubber track and major suspension mods are waaayyyyyyy out of the price range.

Different base gasket? As in the gasket between the crankcase and cylinders? Man, that thing is so thin, I wouldn't think it'd effect compression at all.......

Hey guys, I was talking to a guy that I got a bunch of parts from a couple years ago... He was getting out of the JD sled owning/tuning/restoring hobby and gave me a pickup load of parts...

He said that the single biggest performance mod he ever did was to put the 21/39 gears out of a 340 Liquifire into a 440..... Said it cut his top speed about 5-8 mph, but gave him amazing acceleration... Does this sound plausible? It makes sense to me.....

Ok, thought so........

Should I use the current crop of studding supplies or look for the older crown type studs being these are cleated tracks?

My dad had an old Polaris TX back in the day...... He had some of the crown studs scattered around to give him some grip on the ice. Don't really think it helped in the snow much.......
