This is in regard to the 100C on the 340/5 in the X300.
I noticed that the shiny area of the clutch sheave doesn't come anywhere near the outside edge. Obviously it hasn't been seeing the belt.
So I pulled the cover off to take a look. The only thing that jumped out at me, was the fact that the moveable sheave wobbles around pretty good.
The 100C does not have a replaceable bushing, so I would have to find a better one, or buy a new 102C
I'm assuming that the moveable face is supposed to fit snugly on the shaft.
In real world useage, how worn does the moveable face have to be before it causes problems?

Brian, If there is too much play between the movable & the stationary it won't work properly, sometimes the movable is real lose with out the cover on but once the cover is put on then it seems to slide better.....
just ck it over real good & make sure there isn't any hairline cracks in the movable especially down where it slides on the stationary.
check the buttons, rollers, ramps & pins for ware, as who knows how many miles or how much abuse the clutch has had over the years

I had a 100C I had bought off ebay a couple of years ago. I had never taken it apart before tonight. It was supposedly off a '73 X8, but from everything I read, X4, 6s and 8s all used the same arms and spring. I cleaned it up, lubed it and put it on. So far it appears to be an improvement, I no longer have the slight chatter on engagement that I had recently noticed.
Only problem was that I ran the sled out of gas ( apparently ) over the ridge to the north while trying it out! It died right by my Uncles buildings ( good fortune )
but it was around midnight, so I pulled the sled off the trail, and walked home.
I normally take a flashlight and the cell phone when I ride at night, but hadn't figured on going that far. The sled was running so good with the new clutch, I just kept going. ( wouldn't have called the wife anyway! )
I have a couple of the NOS gas gauges, I guess I had better put one on.

I don't have any Comet lube on hand, So I lubed the sliding surfaces with Never Sieze, and the rollers and arms with a very small shot of moly roller chain lube.
Seems to be working nice so far.

Brian, Most lubes (oil based) will gather belt dust which is then like an abrasive. the best thing I found is an aerosol applied graphite lube ( I purchase from NAPA) it goes on liquid & dries instantly upon contact. So it's a lot easier to apply than powdered graphite.
