Here's a lesson in JD carbs 101. When buying an aftermarket throttle cable, it comes with 2 jamb nuts. Don't do what I did, and spend 3 nights in a freezing garage before you realize that you need to remove one of them for the slides to seat. My last q's are...
1. What notch does the e-clip need to be on?
2. When sychrnizing, does it make sense to just turn the adjuster until the throttle cable seats, or should I do that, and then put it wide open, and go by the book?
3. does the oil injection pump still pump oil in the closed position?
4. How should I have the oil injection pump set?

guitardude081,
Check out Ryan's online service manual. This should answer most of your questions.

Some of the pages are missing. To set up the carb from scratch:
-remove the airbox
-back out the idle screws
-loosen the throttle cables
-turn in the idle screws until a slight resistance is felt while touching the carb slide, then turn in 4 turns
-set both idle screws the same way
-open the throttle lever on the handle bar fully (wide open ) and wrap a rubber band or tape the lever open.
-adjust each cable so the bottom edge of the rear of the carb slide(closest to engine) is flush with the inner top edge of the carb. A mirror is a good aid in checking this.
-set both cables in the same mannner
-remove the tape or rubber band and allow the throttle lever to return in the normal position
-check to make sure the carb slides return and seat on the idle screws.
-start engine, warm-up and adjust idle. Both idle screws must be turned equal amounts.
