How do you troubleshoot wire hand warmers
If I am correct you should have 12volts unregulated from the engine to the switch? Or does the power come from the lighting circuit? I am trying to help someone with a polaris get his hand warmers working.

How do you troubleshoot wire hand warmers
I have a 78 Arctic cat eltigre 6000 , that I found out has handlebar warmers in it . Did not know this at first , because there is no toggle switch .
The previous owner wired them in through the ignition switch , first click off of the off position turns them on , next click to run keeps them off .
They are run off the lighting coil if that helps .

The lighting coil supplies power to the lights and anything else you have hooked to that curcuit such as warmers or heated helmet shield.
As the voltage regulator is in parallel with the coil, the entire system is regulated.
This appiles to every sled I have ever seen regardless of color, year, ect.

The stock ignition switch for a 6000 Tigger is a two position/two contact switch.
So the switch mentioned must have been replaced with an older type switch that had a seperate set of contacts to turn the lights on. I see no problem with this setup.

After some checking around I found one place that said some sleds run unregulated power from the lighting coil to the hand warmers for max heat, but run regulated power to the thumb warmer so it doesn't melt the plastic throttle lever. And if you have a high low switch it also runs through a resister on the low side.

So you are saying everything electrical always runs off of regulated voltage on most all sleds? Including hand warmers?JDT wrote:The lighting coil supplies power to the lights and anything else you have hooked to that curcuit such as warmers or heated helmet shield.

How do you troubleshoot wire hand warmers
I have seen in the past where guy have wired into unregulated voltage & melted the grips. Unless the grips are like the -77 Deeres (the big hard plastic ones) I would say put like the rubber grip 78-84 on regulated voltage as they will get hot enough..

Yes, The lighting coil on the stator runs everything electrical.
The ignition coils are completely isolated from the lighting.
The only share a common ground.

I'm not to good with electronics but to test the hand warmers would you do a continuity/ohm test to see if they are any good or not? I would think no continuity=junk?

MuskyBear,
It would help if we knew the exact ohms of a good hand-warmers, but if you get any reading, that would indicating they should be good. If they test out as 0.0 then I would suspect a short circuit. If the reading is open / infinity, then there is a open/burnt wire.

My personal experince with warmers is it is usually the switch that fails.
But what Harley said will tell you a lot about the elements.
