82' 440 LF can't get clutch off?

Post by MuskyBear »

I'll ask one more time before I get a torch out and cut it off. The threads for the clutch puller are stripped out of the clutch I tried heating it and prying it while rapping with a hammer and drift. Anyone have any other sugestions befor I totally ruin the clutch it's a 108c or tr800?

Well if the treads for for the clutch puller are pulled out or stripped out of the clutch, it's ruined now anyway, I guess I don't under stand your last sentance
it will either say Comet 108C or it'll say John Deere TR800. if it is a TR800 it probably was shot to begin with, they weren't a very reliable clutch.

have you tried to re tap it? i would try that before i cut it off with the torch. and if you do cut it off. BE VERY CAREFULL!!! i pulled the clutch off my 79 blizzard 5500 this fall to find that someone that had it before me had cut a clutch off this motor. in doing so they cut a huge chunk of the crank off too. so there i sat with a whole crap load of money in a new top end and a junk crank. the guy i got it from said it didnt run all that well, all i can do is shake my head and say huh, what a dumba**. all im saying is just be carefull, it can be done.

One problem with retaping the clutch is then finding a clutch puller to match what you now have for theads

I'm pretty sure it is a tr800 thats why I'm not to worried about ruining it, maybe I can just split it with a die grinder and a cut off wheel would be better than a torch?

How would you make a puller? My friend has a machine shop. If the motor was on a bench I could pull it off, but it's still in the frame on a 1982 440 LF

That's the whole problem, I can't get the motor out of the frame without pulling the clutch first.

Yes the die grider & cutoff wheel would be a very good idea, problem is most of the time we don't know what kind of tools you guys have available for you to use.
Just make sure you try to disassemble the clutch as much as you can before you start cutting.
Like first take off the cover & spring, then cut the spider off the stationary (fixed face) sheive (because it screws on & you won't be able to hold the clutch to unscrew it) once the spider is out of your way then you can remove the moveable sheive, that will give you full access to the stationary sheive for cutting with the grinder.
I would measure how far back inside the stationary the crankshaft is, mark it, then cut
(remember not to get to deep) 2 horizontal cuts 180 deg from each other in the stationary, remember that the taper on the crank is only about 1" long after that the stationary sheive is only about .100" thick. ( you might even have to cut the aluminum face of the stationary off the steel part that is stuck to your crank for easier access yet)
good luck
