Hirth 220R6
Does anyone know what this engine was used in?
What is up with that weird ignition system?
It is nothing like a R4 which I am fimiliar with.
Any info would be welcome.
Thanks Todd

Hirth 220R6
The 220R was used by Boa Ski, Moto Ski, Chaparral, Homelite, Polaris, Scorpion, Skiroule, Sno Jet and the 220R4 was used by Sno Prince according to my old service manual. I didn't see any mention of an R6 though. What is different about the ignition?

Hirth 220R6
I have worked on several machines that had the 220R4 with points.
This sled has a 220R6 and it has CDI.
Pretty strange for a 1971 machine.
Talked with Les Prinz last night and he thinks it was a prototype engine Hirth sent to the manufacture for evaluation.
Just trying to get as much info on it as I can.
Thanks for the reply.

I've never seen a Hirth of any sort with CDI. I wouldn't mind seeing some pics if you could post one or two.

Hi Pete.
From the outside the Hirth looks like any other 493. I had spark only on one side so I pulled the flywheel to dress the points. Suprise! No points.
I took a closer look at the ID tag. It is a model 220R6, no the usual 220R4 that we are used to seeing. The ignition system is Bosch.
What happened is one of the two bolts that hold the stator plate to the case halves came loose and the magnets picked it up. Then it smashed one of the two trigger coils. So I have a destroyed coil and no spark.
.........
I spent an hour on the phone today calling Hirth and Bosch Serivice Centers and Distributors in FL, MI, PA, MN and OH and sent an email to Germany looking for a trigger coil.
I have to wait till Monday to find out if I can get a new one. I did find a used one but if I can get new I would go that route.
So far I am thinking that this is the only engine of it's kind in the world. I was told that it was a prototype unit shipped to the US for evaluation. The Hirth rep in OH said there is no such model number. No listing in any catologs ect. But there is because I have it.
And the fact that the sled it is in is not suppose to even exist makes me think it is a one of a kind. A 1971 Scorpion Mark III. Not a Stinger III, a Mark III.
I can add this to my collection of ultra rare Scorps which includes a 1969 Mark II 303 Wankle(one of 50 built) and a 1970 Mark III 500ES(one of 10 built).
I will post a picture tomorrow when I go back to the shop.

It definately sounds like a one off mill, and a very interesting one at that. Speaking of rare Scorps, did you see that pic of the 1981 Scorpion Sierra in the Feb issue of American Snowmobiler. It's a really nice looking sled. I had never heard of it before. Apparently, it's one of only three of built. Are the other two hiding out at your place?JDT wrote:

I have not seen the Sierra in the issue but there was a Sierra at the Scorpion Reunion eariler this month. It was shown by Les Prinz.
The sled was built as a prototype for the 82 models. But as Arctic Enterprises owned Scorpion back than and went out of bussiness in 81 the operation at Crosby went down with Cat.
No Sierra in my collection....but I wish.

Nice pics, Todd. The sled looks in great shape. At first glance I thought that was a Tillotsen HD carb......but looking closer at it, it looks somewhat different, though it's a bit hard to tell in the pic. What is it?

It is a Keihin!
I would not have believed it unless I saw it but....
The sled had not seen daylight since 1974.
Yes it is in excellent shape.
