77 chain cases
I replaced my chaincase on my 76 LF this weekend for a 77 case. (I like the newer tensionser and broke 2 of the butterfly type) anyway the question I have is when I hit the brakes the chain rachets could the spring be weak causing this? the chain doesn't rachet under power. and one other question will and 80+ Lf case fit? with the screw tensioner?

You Can use the newer chain case, Later this summer I will be making what was a up-date for the 78 CC sleds, ( an adapter to add the roller tightener to the 77 chain case)

JDXspec,
I had swapped out the chaincase on my 76 cyclone many years ago with all new parts with the 77 update. I have never experienced the chain ratcheting. I would think the spring tensioner you have is weak. NOS springs are still out there.

it should not the chain and or sprockets. The sprockets I used were the ones in the 76 chain case 24:40 ratio I never had a ratchet problem with the old tensioner except when they break. <_< Everything looked to be the right tension/length when assembled, alignment is good also.
Will double ck anyway.

If I remember right when going from the old tightener to the 2nd gen tightener you had to use a shorter chain, Rich could probably answer this better than I.
Also make sure that teeth on your old sprocket's aren't rounded off & or the chain isn't also rounded, because of prior ratcheting.
