1980 Liquifire Carb info needed!!

Post by flacker36 »

I just picked up a 1980 Liquifire 440. After getting into it, I noticed the carbs are different from eachother. They are both Mikuni, but one is a power jet & the other is not. There is a number "34" stamped on each ( I'm guessing it means 34mm)??

I checked in the manual & the proper carb JD # is AM55068 for both of them.

Does anyone know what AM55068 translates to in the Mikuni numbers??

Better yet, does anyone know what carb I should have on the machine??

Any help would be great!!

Ok - I will measure my carbs to see if they are 36mm or 34mm. If I need to get different carbs, where should I start?

Does Mikuni still make a 36mm or do I have to find some old carbs?

Also I would like to rebuild my Mikuni fuel pump. This is the original fuel pump & I have not seen the rebuild kit for it just the newer ones. Any idea of where to get one?

You can get the fuel pump rebuild kit from MN Vintage Snowmobile. They are a sponser of this site. Ive used the rebuild kit on several of my sleds.

I did find that there is a small hole that you need to drill out of one of the new gaskets. It is not punched out. I can post a picture if you like...when rebuilding it you should be able to figure out what I talking about...

As for the fuel pump, do you have to drill out the small hole or will it work without drilling it out??

I am sure it is there for a reason. I am not sure if it will work if you do not drill the hole in the new gasket. I will post a picture sometime this weekend...

Mikuni does offer a 36mm but it is a not powerjet as originally offered. If you need to swap carbs you'd be better swapping out to 38mm carbs - non powerjet. They are more readily available. Otherwise I'm sure you could score some used carbs from someone off this site.

Eric is correct. These kits were repopped twice. Once using a Liquifire stacker kit and once using a Kawasaki LTD stacker pump. There is no way to tell if your going to get the LTD or the Liquifire set. They are identical, other than, the Liquifire had an additional set pin on one of the plates. It is kind of a pain, but this pump is no longer made, and is superior to any of the new pumps offered, so it is definately worth the extra time to rebuild it [also alot cheaper].

Joe-

Also replace your in-tank fuel pick-up/filter. Be certain to replace it with one that has a built-in check valve. This is often overlooked and is critical to your fuel system performing correctly.

Ok - from the sounds of it, I will drill/punch out the small hole on the diaphram.

I now have a set of original 36mm power jet carbs - so that problem is solved.
