1980 LF Suspension Shock

Post by boetie83 »

I finally got around to taking a look at my suspension after the ER trip back in Feb. When the suspension was out I noticed that there was shock oil all over everything. Apparently the shock is blown. Went to DK online and found they have them for about $35. It is a Parts Unlimited Brand shock and from my experience with that brand of parts they are all junk. Just wondering if anyone has used one of these? Or if I should begin the seach for a NOS shock? If anyone has any other ideas I am open to suggestions. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can step up to a Gas shock from Kimpex or KLH (?).

1980 LF Suspension Shock

I had bought a parts unlimited shock this year for my 80 liquifire and it was good for about a week, I guess that is all the time I gave it before I started jumping the sled off a snow bank that the plow truck made. I ended up bending the chrome steele rod at almost a 90 degree angle after the mount broke off the top of the shock and hit the track and tunnel while moving foreward. I still cant understand how there was not a big rip or some kind of damage to the track or tunnel. I felt it hit too and it sent the whole sled up in the air when it cought. so if you dont plan on beating the hell out of ot 10 ft in the air, I think the shock would of lasted a while under normal trail/field conditions. I am going to try to find a better built one for mine as I plan to do the same things to it next year.

I do not know if you access to Kimpex or Canadian Tire ? Kimpex old # 04-245 or new #298758 or CTC #26-4155-8. I have been using this shock on my Liq`s and Sporfires for 10 years now and it seems to stand up very well. Hope it helps.

Kimpex has discontinued this shock and they are sold out, in both part numbers, and have been for over a year. They are not going to make it in the future. I've tried Fox, PU, Comet, and Gas Pro. The closest match I can find is perfect -except- the 7/16" eye is 7/8" open. If I could find a grommet insert for 7/8" to a sleeved 7/16" we would be in business. Then there would be a high pressure and a low pressure gas option available. I'm not familiar with Canadien tire, I'll see what they have listed.

If a guy decided to use this shock and make a bushing, what material would work best? Could you take a piece of stock and Lathe it down to the correct size then drill a 7/16 hole through it and call it a day? If this would work can steel be used or would you have to go to some kind of nylon stock? Just wondering how this would work.
