repair crack in hood

Rob,

Your hood, like most all other Deere hood except the original 340/s ABS hood, it made out of fiberglass. It is repairable, but it must be done correctly. Simply laying a piece of resin soaked glass matting behind a crack will not perminently fix it. You will need to open up the crack and loosen the fibers around it for a good bond.

You should be able to find general repair instructions on the glass repair kits or on the net.

I hope this helps,

To stop the crack from running, drill a hole at the end of the crack, roughly .025 wider than the width of the crack.

Thanx Joe and Danzing. Got the usual 4 inch crack in the side of the hood right by the left hood retaining strap. I have done glass work before, but wasn,t sure if you could use fibreglass on sheet mould compound hoods, and actually have it last. Good tip on the drill a hole idea at the end of the crack. Wasn,t aware of that one.

fiberglass can be tricky to repair also using resin and matting on a compasite mould glass is not good idea . there are products at your autobody store that will work alot better.a crack near the edge or one the edge is tough to ever stop cracking do to the fact that it si a flex piont the drill a hole at the edges of the crack does work .but the original crack must be fixed right .i use a die grinder with a small carbide bit to flar out the crack on both sides out to 1.5 inches then use adhesive promoter to give it a good bite make sure your repair spot is really rough and i use a fiberglass repair product by 3m.sand it and fill as you you need. also they have a reinforce patch you can put on the back which works really good at stopping the flex in the panel and it is paintable . hope this will help just take you time and do it right and you wont have to fix it a second time ..
