I have a 1973 john deere 400 with a 340 ccw and a walbro wda32 carb in it. I rebuilt the carb and it seems to be drawing plenty of fuel. It has spark on both plugs but I cannot make it run. It also seems to have good compression on both sides. It fires, but if it makes two revolutions thats it. Most of the time it just backfires into the carb. Is there a way to time this engine? The condesors are soldered in on this machine. Is that normal or should they just crimp on? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

tmartin,
More than likely the crankshaft seals are worn out. Check out the FAQ section more helpful info.

Switch the sparkplug wires around and see what happens.
Lots of times they get reversed and all it will do is backfire.
If one wire is two short to reach plug #2 then switch the red and white wires at the coils.
