I finally got my 1973 John Deere 400 running. After fighting with the engine in the sled for a week or so I finally decided to pull the engine. After removing the cylinders I found that the rings were stuck in the pistons. This explains why it would just pop into the intake. Of course as I tried to loosen the rings, I broke one. After an extensive search i finally located genuine ccw rings locally. I honed the cylinders, resealed the bottom end, and put new gaskets in it all the way around. I put the engine in yesterday and it fired up in about ten pulls. I tuned the carb for a half hour and got it running pretty darn good. Now I just need a clutch (the old salisbury has seen its better days), a ski, and a seat cover and she'll be ready for the wisconsin winter. Thanks for all the posts I received, they were very helpful.

Isn't the Salsbury 780 the newer version Salsbury with only one spring Like the Comets or am I wrong on the number???
If on your clutch 3 or the six clutch springs are broke , The rollers are probably also shot, along with the nylon slides, If Rich has a complete rebuild kit that's the way to go...

Rich, Which Salsbury was the newer style with a single spring, a cast cover, with like cooling fins built into the cover, Chaparral used these in 73 as a update kit after the flat side belt/clutch thingy didn't work out & these were a disaster also. I think Deere's part number for these clutches would be AM52323 or at least they were similar to this Deere clutch using this type of arm & roller setup....
Did Deere have good luck with these clutches??
