Deere that wont stop running
I friend that has a 400 Kioritz powered Deere called me tonight with a problem that I have never heard of before and I had no advise for him.
The problem is that when he pushes the kill switch or turns the key off there is still spark on one cyclinder and the engine will not shut off.
Any help out there for this one?

Points or CDI ? Are you sure the engine is not running to lean and pre-igniting.

Points.
No, it is pure electrical as it does not kill the plugs when they were laid on the engine and the rope pulled over. One plug still sparks with the key or kill switch off.
Additional info would be that the sled does have electric start.
This one really puzzles me....

I am betting the condensor is bad on that cylinder.

Whew, been so long, but on a 2 stroke W/points Ign. don't you ground out the points to kill the cyl.?? if that is true, I would back ck the hot wire from that set of points to the on/off switches, there would have to be a break in the wire harness or the connectors someplace..

I assume he has tried disconnecting the plug by the recoil?
I think Kenny is on the right track. The mag works unless it is grounded.

I have not looked at the machine as it this guy is 200 miles from me.
True, OFF is accomplished by making a connection betwwen both points/coils. But one side does cut out so I do not think it is wires.
I am thinking a problem on the stator plate itself and will call him tonight and suggest Paul's idea of a condensor.
If the motor harness was disconnected neither side would shut off.
Lighting system works also I am told.

Doesn't the condenser get the electrical charge from the points? Also if the wire that grounds out the one set of points from the switches has a break or open there would be no way to kill the voltage to that set of points??
With the switches in the "on position" does the motor run properly on both cylinders??
Just food for thought

Runs fine in the on position.
Still runs on one side in the off position.

The condenser is a simple capacitor that can store a small amount of current. When the points begin to open, the current flowing through the points looks for an alternative path to ground. If the condenser were not there, it would try to jump across the gap of the points as they begin to open. If this were allowed to happen, the points would quickly burn up and you would hear heavy static on the car radio. To prevent this, the condenser acts like a path to ground. It really is not, but by the time the condenser is saturated, the points are too far apart for the small amount of voltage to jump across the wide point gap. Since the arcing across the opening points is eliminated, the points last longer and there is no static on the radio from point arcing.
I found this info searching, good explanation.

To determine if there is a wiring issue or a ground/condensor issue in the stator area issue. On the harness side of the engine connect jump the black and the black/white wire together and pull it over with the plugs out if they are both dead its in the wiring if 1 still fires its in the engine. Look at the wiring diag in the link below this will help explain if needed.

Well I talk on the phone to the guy that had the problem with the sled not shuting off. It has been fixed.
The fix is had to understand but he said it now works like it is suppose to.
The issue was oxidation on one set of points. He dressed them with emorycloth and presto, Fixed.
