Carb Help

I'm looking for some carb info for a 73 JD300 with the 295 axial fan kohler in it. I had a Walbro WDA-37 carb on it until it was stolen. As far as I know that was the stock carb "slightly modified" (removed choke butterfly & pin, and replaced the stock filter with a velocity stack) it had a small bog out of the hole but, top end it was a screamer plugs looked golden.
What I want to know is if my old carb was correct for my application, what may have caused that bog w/ the old carb, and if a different carb might better suit me.
I want all around power!
