JD 214 Lawnmower

Hi all,
I have been given a JD 214 Lawnmower from the 70's. I don't know anything about JD Lawn equipment so any info will be put to good use. I was given this mower by a family friend and he is also giving me a 210 that he is keeping the motor from. You may have seen my post about making it into a Snow-mower. Anyhow he told me the 214 runs but looses power after awhile and needs work done on the valves, he did it a few years ago and said that the 14hp engines commonly had this problem. I am wondering if anyone has a permanent fix for this, good temporary fix, or info on if the mower is worth getting from him. Like i said, there is also a 210 that may have parts other than the engine and it is all free so I am thinking it should be a good investment of my time and a small amount of my money.

214 is a nice mower, had one for a while then upgraded to a 314. those engines seemed to have a tendancy to use oil though, eventuly had to replace the one on the 314- used a 12HP vanguard v-twin- much more power very few modifications- could probably be done on the 214 but may be harder as it is a comply different powertrain.

Thanks for replying, I have heard that the 14hp engines had problems b/c they had a dipper lubrication type system so when mowing ditched and such oil would not be delivered properly.
