Fuel Comsuption

Post by harleysportster »

My question: What is considered normal fuel consumption with the early cyclones and early liquifires.
I have noticed that if I have my 76 440 liquifire out and my 78 440 cyclone out at the same time on the same trail, the 78 cyclone uses more fuel than the liquifire. In fact, the 78 cyclone uses more fuel than my older 76 cyclone. I ride the 78 cyclone, Dana rides the 440 liquifire.
We were running a fairly smooth trail for approx 30 miles. I do tend to stab the thottle now and then to open the sled up but then back out of it.

The only differences I can see are:
76 cyclone- black main spring, F weights, 38 degree cam, 440 gearing
76 liquifire-black main spring, R wieghts, 38 degree cam, 440 gearing
78 cyclone-sliver main spring, F wieghts, 44 degree cam, 440 gearing
(I may have the weights backwards between the cyclone and the liquifire)
At approx 5,000 to 5,500 rpm, the speedo is at 30 mph on the 78 cyclone
What is the capacity of the fuel tank on the 78 cyclone with the storage box, the 76 held 8 gallons.

Pat

I think the 78 were 6.5 gallons. My 77 440 LF gets around 8-9 mpg, it's a rough approx but I had a 55 -60 mile trip and put in 7 gal us. It's hard to say for sure.

Scott,
That sounds about right for my 76 liquifire also. At the end of the 30 mile trip the liquifire had almost a 1/2 tank left and the 78 cyclone was below 1/4 tank. I found a suggestion to calibrate your fuel gauge cap by first finding how much the tank holds, then starting from an empty tank, fill it in quarter increaments marking the gas cap aroud the outside where the needle is pointing at the E, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, F . The aftermarket gas caps are way off with the fuel level pointer.

Rich,
Now that I see the difference in the capacity of the 78 cyclone tank verses the 76 tank, I may switch back to the earlier style even tho the storage box is a nice feature.

We tried to figure out last winter what the difference was, because of such a drastic difference between the two sleds, I don't think they ever switched sleds ( one of those this is mine that is yours things! ) we finally gave up trying to figure it out.. as long as the kids had fun, who cared how much gas they burned, LOL

43 mpg out of a 3800 motor
 ? That is quite impressive, although they are great engines. My GTP had the 3.8 SC engine, and even with 11 pounds of boost and some engine modifications I still could get around 30mpg on the highway.

TakeItToTheLimit, you said 1980 Liquifire 440 14.5 MPG (service recommendation/mine). Where can I find the info to get close to this?

How about this for mileage my 1989 arctic cat wildcat 650 would get a whopping 3.2 miles per gallon. Thats a price you pay for the power it had however. I beleive it had 2 44mm carbs my thumb used to get so sore running that sled I be using my index and middle finger wrapped under the bar to work the throttle. I never actually checked any of the deeres.
