Hello I just bought a 72 or 73 JD300 at Haydays last weekend here in MN. I have 2 problems with it I believe.
1) the #1 has little spark at times. and no spark ( mostly no spark) Would the first choice to get a new external coil from dennis kirk catalog?
2) when i pull the pull start, the gas pushes into the carb, but it just floodes gas out of all the gaskets on the side of the carb, besides it also comes out of the opening in the carb where the choke flap is and runs out.
Would you get the Diaphragm and gasket kit or the Overall kit out of Dennis Kirk?
or try to find a new Walbro carb ?
Look in Pict. at the black gaskets. you can see the glare from all the gas that seeps out when i pull on the pull start rope.
Thanks,
Travis I.

HAving owned two of these, some of the problems sound familar. As to the no spark/week spark, I trust youve checked/replace plug wires, and connection to the coils??? Assuming you have, the most likely problem is the points and condensers. These are easly repalce, provided you can get the flywheel of (3 arm puller and a hammer needed). My experience is that you should just clean the points with an emery board. make sure to blow out any dust and I've read that you should wipe it wiith alcohol. Anyway (and you might now this) points cna be very tempermental. The smallest amount of dust can prevent the contacts/points from closing. You can do this thru a small window in the flywhell, and if still no good, consider pulling the fly wheel (this is how I spent my evenings last winter... tear-down, rebuild... 5 times!) Short money to repalce the points and condenser (plus a little solder)
As to the carb, have you had it a part. Sound like it is improperty constructed as there are alot of gaskets/diaphrams. There is a good schematic/diagram on this site that shows the Walbro car. If repalcing, the gasket set is cheap to ($10)
Hope this helps. OThers may have more ideas.

Heres the steps Id take as far as the no spark.
1] unscrew the plug wire from coil and the cap from the wire look for corrosion cut like 3/8 inch off each end and reassemble. check for spark if none
2] unbolt the 2 coils from the fan housing and sand clean all the the grounding points reassemble and try again if nothing
3] remove recoil and fan pulley you will see the windows in flywheel use an emery board or cloth to clean the set of points with the colored wire red/white that corresponds to your no spark cylinder as stated it is very critical to make sure theres no debree left on the contacts
4[ IF STILL NO GOOD AT THIS POINT YOU WILL NEED TO PULL FLYWHEEL AND REALLY CLEAN POINTS GOOD
I was just working on an x6 with no spark Sunday and when I looked through the flywheel dont ask me how but the 1 set of points was bent so the contacts didnt touch.
Carb wise just put a new diaphram and gasket kit in no point in trying to fix it with old parts.

As for diaphram kit vs. complete carb kit, the complete kit comes with other parts such as c-clips, needle springs, replacement metering needle (internal), etc. It would be a good idea to get just to have the spare parts if they are not needed now.

I have the same sled & problem. Rebulit the carb, installed new points, condensers, ext. coils, wire harness, flywheel key. Still missing spark on one side. When i first got the sled i noticed the cam advance-retard, was binding ,got that freed ,but have been trying to get this green machine going now for 4 yrs.Hopefully before snow i'll have time to change out the internal coil on that side,Dont know what else to do.Let me know if you get yours going & ill do the same.
