Carb / Fuel Pump on LF

Post by Spitfire79 »

I've cleaned up the PJ Carbs on my 1980 LFire and am trying to get it running. I did this because it would not rev up past 4000 after a few minutes warming up. Now it has a hard time startinfg and won't stay running. Are there any setting to adjust other than the air screw and choke cables? I didn't change the throttle settings. I set the air screws at 1 1/2 turns out. I set the choke by inserting a rod in the choke tube and adusted the plunger to sit on top of it at full choke. This adjustment doesn't seem right. I'm going to do the fuel pump as well. My manuel says these are not rebuildable. Do I just buy a new pump? If so, any suggestions?
Thanks

Carb / Fuel Pump on LF

The fuel pump should be rebuildable. Dennis Kirk and others sell kits for the mikuni fuel pumps. As far as the choke goes, when you look in the choke bore, when choke is on full, it should be flush whith the top of the bore., and should be fully closed when you have the choke off.

How do I know if it fully closed ?
Also I notice the fuel in the power jet line starts climbing at about 4000 revs. Can someone explain the operation of how these carbs work in comparison to conventional Mikunis and how they are to be adjusted.

Also I did not have the airbox on when trying to run it. I noticed in a previous post that the PJ carbs require the airbox. Could this make a big difference or should it still run ?
