JD Identification Tags

Post by vendbj »

Is anyone reproducing these tags on both sides on the rear tunnel? I have been restoring a dator and couldnt save the id tags and would like to make it as original as possible. I'm also a new member but have been reading this forum for quite some time.. just decided to join.

Thanks,

Ben

I tape over the tags when striping a chassis, as I don't think it's a good Idea to start repoping Deere serial number tags, then we'll have the same problem as the 67 RS Camaro's, More on the road today than were produced.. I see someone is repoping older vintage Cat serial number tags Now there are clone everything Cats showing up..

Kenny,

I think that is a really good point. I know one can aquire new serial tags for old Deere tractors. You just have to prove that you own the tractor in question and the serial number goes on record as being reproduced i believe. It is not a bad idea for the legit cases, but it MUST be regulated.

Have you ever seen one of the JD supplied replacement tractor serial number tags? It's some sort of modern creation and not an attempt in any way to replicate the original serial number tag. Completely useless for restoration purposes and ugly to boot. I would imagine that the same would apply here if Deere were to supply replacement snowmobile tags. Something to think about.

I had a John Deere GP Wide Tread in need of a complete restoration. This is a fairly rare and desirable tractor to own today, produced in low numbers. The serial number tag had disappeared over the years but through my contacts I was able to trace it back to an earlier owner and found out the correct serial number. I also found out who now had the original tag and where it was. So if I replaced the tag there would be two with the same serial number out there in collector land. I had thought about just reproducing the tag and leaving it blank but ultimately decided that no, this tractor was the one that came with that serial number originally so I was going to reproduce and install the correct serial number. I sold it along with the other tractors in June so no longer have to worry about it I guess.

Same thing with the sleds, counterfeits could begin to appear possibly. Just another result of their increasing popularity unfortunately.

Would be pretty hard to do a counterfiet Deere sled as the tunnels are stamped and would be tough to alter. < like anything else it could be done but for most true collectors, the fakes would be easy to detect> Tags would be a great idea.

Don't get me wrong, if I ever get around to restoring a sled I don't plan on using an old faded, torn up tag either. It would take away from the restoration. But since I would be replacing like with like there wouldn't be any problems. If they're not available when I need them then I'll get them made.

I also don't think there's as much of a numbers game with the snowmobiles as there is with the tractors. Only the very rare ones would be candidates to be counterfeited. A 1978 sled is mostly like another 1978 sled so no incentive would exist to alter the serial number, etc
