MEGA STUCK SECONDARY CLUTCH HELP ME OUT!!!

Post by monte44 »

I am working on a 295/S project and am having a VERY hard time getting the secondary clutch off. What am I doing wrong?? I removed to bolt tipped it on the side and have been doing a combo of brake fluid/penetrating oil for over a week with no luck at all not even a little!! The clutch is very rusty and I did not expect it to just pop off but oh boy what a stubborn mule!! I could take the whole shaft out with the clutch on and try to press it off but I know that will just wreck either the clutch and or the shaft. If I cant get it off does anybody have a secondary and a shaft that is not stuck of a JDX or something that they could part with?

Thank You,
Aaron

If I remember correctly, the service manual states to back out the bolt about 1/4 inch and give it a good smack with a hammer. This should break it free and move the shaft over into the gearbox enough to gain clearance to remove the clutch.
If anyone dissagrees, feel free to correct.

Not all the secondary shafts are the same. I checked the part number for the 295/s shaft (M65008) and it DOES NOT cross to any other models, so you better be careful with those parts. I don't know what the differences are.

I am convinced it is not coming apart!! Oh goody!!! What are my other options?? I have a whole chain case assy with clutch out of a parts JDX would this swap and work fine?? I am sure I the shaft got damaged from me smacking it with a hammer on the bolt head. Even if I could get it apart I could make a new shaft. Are the secondary clutches the same from a 295 to other mid engine JD's? I have another 295 parts sled and that one is stuck just as bad!!!

I would suggest dissembling the shaft out of the chaincase & using a press on it. I don't think there is enough room in the 295/S chassis to get a straight on hit on either the shaft or the driven from the backside to do any good.. Better to sit down & think about it for a while rather than get in there swinging with a hammer & ruining irreplaceable parts.. Don't get into a hurry NOW as that can get very costly.
I have a good used shaft without bearings $40.00, A used Driven $75.00 + USPS Priority shipping
Just my $.0765 worth

I'm thinking I couldn't get the secondary off the shaft of my 400 either.
But once I pulled the whole assembly out of the chaincase, it came without too much effort.

A press with the proper fixtures to support the clutch will make short work of this job. Don't go nuts with the hammer.

If you have to hammer, use a block of wood as a punch. It's better to ruin your lucky 2X4 rather than a clutch and shaft.

Well I finally got it apart but not with the best results. I found that the key inside on the shaft was broke in two pieces and the one half galled up inside so bad it was basically welded to the clutch! After getting apart i was looking at the key way on the clutch side and noticed a real nice crack in the key way valley. I don't know if it came from the key breaking or from being pressed out. To me it looks like an old crack just on the idea the the metal didn't look clean on the crack. I don't think the clutch is reusable(Just my luck!!!). The shaft should be reusable but I an gonna chuck it up in the lathe and do a run out on it just to make sure it is straight. Has anyone ever herd of this happening before? You would think to do that kind of damage that when it happened it must of dead stopped the sled! What are my clutch options? Has to be another 295 clutch only?

Thank You,
Aaron

Aaron,

The parts book shows that the 295/S sheave shaft is unique to the 295/S only. It uses a different bearing on the chaincase side but shares the same bearing on the sheave side as other 00 & JDX sleds. It also shares the same brake hub. On the sheave hub with the keyway, that same sheave part # AM53004 is used on all Comet equipped 00's , JDX6, and JDX8 models. It should be easy to find one. Any '74-'76 model that I mentioned will have this sheave.
