74 300 Kohler 295-2AX
I have a 300 that we owned since new. I got it out of storage recently and after cleaning the fuel tank/lines/carb it ran fine. (Until it got warm then it died) I found the coil was bad so I replaced both coils, condensers and points. While I had the fan cover plate off to press the condensers in and out, I replaced the oil seal. I couldn't get it timed right so I took it to a guy in Monroe, IA (Horrible choice) he said he had 25+ years experience and that it would only take a few days. At 4 weeks I finally went at got the sled. (He had done NOTHING to it but get it timed.) It seemed to flood out. When I got it started it would flood out. I pulled the carb apart again and replaced the meter lever and blew out all the pieces. I pulled the fan house off and replaced the oil seal on the mag side again. It fired and ran for a little bit then flooded again. ANY THOUGHTS OR HELP. It is a hard thing to take it to a mechanic and dump $$$ into a sled that may not work well for long. Tons of spark, My son said the pulse line seems to PUSH only when I pull the rope.....?????

flodding doesn't sounds like crank seal issue, that's usualy a lean problem or won't run at all...but the fuel pump feeds off the PTO side of the engne so that may be your concern there.....does it run at all? Sounds like timing may be out again...did he advance the cam when he timed it?

It runs for a little bit then floods out. If I pull off the pulse line from the carb it will start in 5-10 pulls and run for awhile then rev up and die. I got it started for a bit, then could keep it running for awhile using the primer I installed.

Sounds like a carb kit is in order. Get the genuine one with the needle and seat.
It will cost more but worth it as the cheap kits do not have all the parts for a total rebuild.

What are the symptoms if a crank seal is leaking?

Poor starting, no starting, running hot, loss of power, alum deposits on the plug.
If the bad seal is on the same side as the pulse line for the fuel pump/carb than the pump may not work at all.
A really bad seal may leak out fuel after the engine was flooded. Problem is if it is on the mag side you can't see it.

I just bought that kit and the metering lever came out of proper calibration. The tip of the needle valve had an abnormality and there wasn't a seat in the kit.
SHOULD the pulse line push and pull? My son held his finger on it when I pulled the rope and he said he only felt air pushing out of the line.

The pulse line does both.
On the down stroke the line pushes and on the up stroke the line pulls.
I assume yours is working Ok as you are having a flooding problem.
But if you have a worn or damage or meladjusted needle and/or seat it will flood big time.

Re: 74 300 Kohler 295-2AX
Is it then possible for the pulse line to push air and not pull air?
Re: 74 300 Kohler 295-2AX
I don't know how that would be possible. If it only pushed the pump would not work.
The amount of pressure/vaccum we are talking about here is very small. Like +/- 3 psi.
A good test for a fuel pump is to pull the pulse line off the pump and grab a chunk of clean line and slide it on.
Then stick the other end in your mouth and blow and suck as fast as you can.
You can draw up fuel from the tank and fill a Mikuni bowl in 30 seconds doing this if your pump is good.
Again if your sled is flooding the pump must be working.

One other thing I may have not mentioned. When the sled is flooded, if I disconnect the pulse line and the sled will start and run fine for a short time then rev up and die out. (I assume it is burning the excess fuel in the manifold) The failure of a mechanic swore up and down as well as at me that the seals were all out).. Is it possible that it is only a bad carb?

Personally, it sounds to me like it is out of time. when it runs, does it run smoothly? What do you have for compression? Maybe rings are in order here.

If the machine is flooding then the fuel delivery part of the equation must work then? I could be looking at it wrong but if the fuel is getting to the carb then the problem has to be further down ie the carb it's self or something further. I could be wrong here just throwing my thoughts in.
