Re: Got my 300 back together and did some miles

Yeah John, thanks for the hook up on the parts. I was able to get some recoil parts and a NOS head from GPI in Michigan, they were great to deal with too. I still have the cold start weak spark on the PTO side to mess with, I will swap the wire and cap side to side and see if the problem moves, but ...

Re: Got my 300 back together and did some miles

It's a 76. Had it since summer of 2008, it came from a farm estate auction near my folks in central MN for $150. Typical machine that had probably been bought new by the owners. It had not been registered since 1991 and had about an inch of pole barn dust on it.

Got my 300 back together and did some miles

I may win the farthest south east rebuild- last year my 76 300 locked up the engine on a ride. http://www.jdsleds.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=18318 I pulled the engine this summer when back in MN having driven there with the family. Tore it apart on my bench down in Georgia. The clutch si...

Re: Taking a vintage sled on a long haul!!

A couple years back I did a fifty mile solo on my 300. Mid week, nice day, did not have any one to ride with me. The route was never more than a mile from a road so it wasn't too remote. http://jethrosgarage.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2013-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2013-04-21T08:47:0...

Re: I am so greatful my Kohler stuck a piston...

Now mostly back together with this- after looking it over, it was the bearing coming apart and the shrapnel dinging up the piston on that side- there was absolutely no aluminum transfer from the piston skirt etc to the cylinder wall. Now I do not know what made the bearing fail or if in fact it was ...

Re: What clutch is on my 76 300 and how to pull it?

I took it apart last night now that I have my clutch puller. What a baby piston, compared to the big diesel stuff I work with.

Re: What clutch is on my 76 300 and how to pull it?

Oddly enough, the day prior I rode it hard, about two miles down the lake at about 35-45 mph which is all I could hang on for skipping the drifts- we had maybe an inch and a half of frozen crust on the ground at my folks, so I hit the lake, which had much more snow. I rode it around on the logging r...

Here is the "wounded Deere" getting towed back! http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u248/EricR_bucket/Swedes%20and%20Goose%20ride/IMG_1522.jpg I did get to return the favor later, when my pal Swede's Yamaha powered Scorpion sheared the grade 5 bolts in the drivers. http://i170.photobucket.c...

Re: What clutch is on my 76 300 and how to pull it?

Both items are rare as an ice auger down here in Georgia where I have my Kohler on the bench! What can I improvise with? I was told on vintagesleds I can cut a slug from a bolt and put in place, then screw the large hollow outer bolt in and that will pop It off. I stuck it running about 25mph in 5* ...

Re: 300/440 up and running again video

I have gotten 58.9 MPH on my handheld GPS out of my '76 300, that was wound out for about 1/4 mile or better on a very hardpacked lake. The Kohler is I think 28 HP? I also have a '73 Ski Doo Oly 340, it tops out at 51.5 GPS, 23 HP. But the Ski Doo would beat the Deere in a 300' drag race, the torque...
