I figured the problem out guys it was a bad stator. The wires had melted together and must have been shorting out. I replaced the coils and all is good now.

1. what would cause the idle to fluctuate up and down when running. i did notice the carb had the wrong jet needle and replace it.

Vice grips work good too.

I have a set of liquifire carbs for 82 with the wrong throttle valves and needles. Manual calls for 3.5 throttle valves and 6DH22 for the needles. These carbs have 2.5 throttle valves and 6dh7 needles in them. Last year sled bogged real bad.
