Re: Trailfire 440 Engine Alignment Question
There are a few things I'm pretty sure I "know". And some things I'm not certain about regarding your question. Some of the JD folks can chime in. What year is your Trailfire? Having owned a '79 Kawasaki Invader since 1982, I have had several years to learn some things regarding clutches. ...

Re: 80-84 Liquifire engine vibrations
TOSS that clutch!! They are extremely sensitive to proper balance. When you work on a clutch, you have to make sure that you put it back together with the arrows on the parts all lined up to maintain balance. When you wrote that someone ground on the back of it to prevent it from rubbing?? !!! :bonk...

Re: Jerks the starter rope out of my hand!
If you suspect there may be some crud in the exhaust pipe, blast from both ends with a garden hose. You will quickly see if anything is in there. Keep blasting until water flows freely and nothing else comes out. Try to leave the pipe in the sun and the wind to evaporate the water from the inside of...

Re: Jerks the starter rope out of my hand!
Glad you found the key...it's easy to knock out of place....I did that on my SkiDoo 9500 this summer! Things that come to mind that would cause your current issue of not being able to rev up and produce power above idle: 1. Eliminate the possibility that mice built a nest in either the exhaust...

Re: Jerks the starter rope out of my hand!
Yes...Timing is off....
Did you align the tiny mark on the stator plate with the mark on the crankcase?
Could you have knocked the key out of place when you installed the flywheel? Ask me how I know that can happen>>>

Re: Snowfire not recommended over 4000'!?
Yeah...I can't see any reason you couldn't re-jet and re-clutch a free air sled to work at altitude. Certainly running around at 0 degrees or 10 degrees F at 4 or 5000 feet would provide at least as much cooling, or more, as operating at sea level on a 30 degree day. Perhaps JD became more warranty ...

Re: Snowfire not recommended over 4000'!?
This is my guess.....At sea level, the atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi. At 5000 ft. this drops to 12.23 psi. That means the air is only 83 % as dense at 5000' versus sea level. In essence, you are giving up 17 % of the cooling ability with a free air engine....quite a bit. A fan cooled engine doesn...

Re: '80 TF 340 Lighting Coil? Working spec?
I cannot find any of the coil resistance specs in any John Deere shop manuals...? Kawasaki lists them in their shop manuals....the 1980 fan cooled 340 Drifter shows the lighting coil should be 0.18 ohm....plus or minus 20 percent. You probably know it's best to check the coils when they are near roo...
