1973 JDX4 drive chain tensioners
First off, are you sure? Is it possible the track is loose and it is what's jumping? We see that here more often. If the chain is jumping teeth, I'd think it is beacuse the sprockets are shot, and no amount of tensioning will help. You could have a broken or missing spring, the nylon chain tensione...

My drive chain is slipping on my 1973 JDX4. Where can I get some new tensioners?

Points for 295 Kohler (JDX4, JD300)
Sledders, I bought a set of points from my local John Deere dealer and they are not the same as the original points that came with the sled (JD300 with the Kohler 295). The hole is too small to fit on the shaft (minds out of the gutter please) and since the hole is too small the points bind on the s...

Engine swaps - what 440 will fit my JD300
I'm sure this has been discussed, maybe on the old board software, but since the search isn't working I'll ask the question. First, a little background - I have been refurbishing my dad's original one owner 1973 JDX4. I have to put a new clutch on, new condensers, new drive sprockets and chain. The ...

'73 JDX4 Kohler 295 Premix - what ratio ?
Thanks, guys. 50:1 it is then. I poured it into the freshly Kreemed tank last night! Now I just have to get the chain tensioners installed and adjust the track and Pray For Snow!!! Dave Flaherty Cedar Falls, IA '73 JDX4 JD300 parts sled

'73 JDX4 Kohler 295 Premix - what ratio ?
I'm just finishing up a refurb on my Dad's one owner 1973 JDX4 (1274 miles) with the Kohler 295 engine in it. It's been a long road, but I finally ran it out of a portable gas can the other night. The sticker on the tank says mix 50:1 with John Deere oil and 20:1 with all other oils. What pre...

Degreaser will also work, like Simple Green or Gunk Foamy Engine Degreaser.

Points & timing 295 Kohler CW or CCW?
Well, I kept trying and finally got it close. The timing isn't perfect though, so I'll see how she runs and I may have to re-adjust it. I squirted some starting fluid into the carb and yanked on the start handle- she fired, so that was encouraging. Now I just have to get the tank cleaned out and tak...

Points & timing 295 Kohler CW or CCW?
Ok, this is very frustrating. This is my first attempt at doing points/timing on a Deere snowmobile. I am following the Clymer manual directions exactly and the timing isn't right. I must be doing something wrong. Here's an abbreviated version of the points and timing adjustment from the Clymer manu...

Points & timing 295 Kohler CW or CCW?
Guys, quick question on setting points and timing. I am using the Clymer manual and it says to set the point gap on the #1 cylinder then "rotate the flywheel clockwise...." My confusion is because when I hear flywheel I think PTO end of the engine, not the front end (which means I would be...
